2012 Auto Trans D-3-2-1 Gears

So I have a 2012 Mustang with an automatic trans, and I'm curious what the 3-2-1 gears are for? I just put the car into drive all the time. I've only owned the car for 3 weeks.

It's supposed to snow like 10 inches here tonight. I overheard someone saying you should drive in 1st when the ground is icy to accelerate slower and avoid spinning the tires. Is this true?

Because those autos didnt have sport mode, i have seen people use those beginning gears to shift up. That way they could get to higher RPMs before moving to 2nd and 3rd, and then finally popping it into Drive.

not really true, bc 1st gear is like 1st gear in a stick shift...it's gonna fly off the start. starting maybe in 3rd or something would work, but gotta make sure it'll even move first.

For snow or extreme inclines there's a button on the side of the handle for low-range gears.

You should start out in 2nd or 3rd gear in the snow. Just saying.....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but D is your full range of gears, 3 is your first 3 gears, 2 your first 2 gears, and 1 locks it in first gear.

In snow with an auto it's best to feather it on the start, be gentle and as soon as you start to slip let up on the gas.

Correct. It will always start in first and upshift one gear at a time, but will be limited to the highest gear position you have selected with the shifter as you stated above.

Thanks for the info! But when would I ever need to use anything other than Drive?

Just when you're playing around and want to hold the gears longer. Just don't abuse it.

We drop from D to 3 in my wife's versa when going down long mountain roads or when climbing. It keeps the transmission from "hunting" and dropping from 4th to 3rd and back repeatedly on the climb and on the decent it helps with engine braking so you don't have to brake as often. This is a fairly common thing to do, I thought.

Yup, that's another common use.

Correct me if I am wrong, but on trucks and such, don't they use 3 and such when towing/pulling something small distances? Doubt anyone would pull anything with a Mustang. lol
