I tried putting this el light on the dash of my '14 v6 mustang. These were wired direct to test. I want to have them wired so they turn on when all the other lights on the dash go on.i don't want a separate switch. It's just a hot and ground. I just really suck at this sort of thing and was hoping to tap the collective knowledge of the forum.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Easiest way would be to tap a positive wire that runs one of the lights on the dash (radio illumination wire comes to mind and is probably the easiest) then just find a good ground. There is a great ground bolt right above the fuse box on the passengers side. Use a test light to make sure you have the right illumination wire.

Lights on=test light on

Lights off=test light off

Success

Thanks! I'll give that a try. Right now the connection side is on the drivers side because I was hoping to tap into a wire on the light switch. Any wire colors that indicate what I'm looking for? Is ground black? I'm used to German cars. They use brown.

I've noticed black and yellow striped wires seem to be ground. I'm sure you can locate the wires you need behind the light switch as well. Just be careful not to disturb anything sensitive. And make sure you are careful if you use those wire splicer type connectors. Sometimes those will cut the wire completely and cause you to lose your original connection. And if that's directly behind your light switch that could suck.

If the car is auto, you can tap into the shifter lights. I did that for my footwells and led cupholder.

I forgot which is which, but you could use the same wires that Starkey recommends for puddle lamps. Should be able to find the video and get wire colors for either side.

Yeah that is a purple/green wire I believe. But if you use that the lights will only come on when he opens the doors or when he hits the unlock in the car. Those don't turn on with the interior lights like he wanted originally.
