Question Gear Swap on a Low Mileage Mustang

Hey guys, I contacted American Muscle about this yesterday but wanted to open it up here, havnt been able to find anything about this in the search tools, but if you guys know, let me know.

My question is my 3.7 V6 has 6000 miles on it and I wanted to do the swap from the factory 2.73's to the 3.73's. The person I spoke with at AM said since the mileage is so low, the only thing I would need to bring into the dealership to do the swap would be the gear set alone:

Ford Racing 3.73 Mustang Gears M-4209-F373N (11-14 V6) - Free Shipping

Is this accurate or is there anything else I should buy to lower down on the cost for parts if the dealership decides to use what they have and rack up the bill?

Thanks for the insight

Ask the dealer what they need, if they want to bring up cost because you don't have a kit then buy it through AM, you should not need it and if you don't then you should just buy the gears.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Ford will only install 3:31's and you still keep the factory warranty.

You are correct, they might do the 3.73 swap but you won't have any warranty with it.

Thanks Christian, I think now the task is finding a dealership that will be willing to do the install and not charge me an arm and a leg, thats the fun part.

Sometimes, the best prices are at local custom mod shops. See if there are any in your area and call around. I got killer prices at my local custom shop. $90 for spoiler install. And they drilled the holes. $200 for my hood vent install. And they cut the holes for that also.

Good luck. My local dealer would do the 3.73 swap for me but it just cost to much in labor($800 or so, just labor) for me to pull the trigger right now.....someday it will get done....someday! Lol

Yea it should be illegal on what they can charge (or do charge). I think they bill us for the techs having a "Learning" experience while doing the installs. Because most have never done it before (some dealers have a revolving door of employees).

Makes sense. They supposedly looked at some install hour list thing that they have and said it would take 8hours to complete. So at $100/hr. is just to way to steep IMO.

In reality it will probably take 3-4 hours because they should have the tools to do this. But regardless, they will bill you 8.

That is a good price and I would think steeda would do a MUCH better install than most dealers.

I may have to drive there when I'm ready since it's only about 3 hours away from me. Hmmmm.

Yeah I got all the info via a live Chat with rod, I am going to see don on friday, I already told my buddy who also has a v6 with 2.73s and he's waiting to see how the swap turns out, I'll let you guys know since most dealerships seem to give you the run around. Steeda is who I would trust anyways

I swapped to 3.55s at about the same miles. I went with the full install kit.

I am thinking myabe 3.73's might be too short for a daily driver though, I am not sure whether to pick 3.55's or just go with the most popular 3.i73's although everyone i talked to swears by 3.73's, they have automatics lol have a manual

I have a bone stock 2012. What's the advantage with changing my gearing? Going from a Ford Focus, I think my car stock is way quick already lol.

the SCT tuner came in this morning and after work I was able to preload one of the 93 octane tunes on the car, prepping everything for gear swap day. I drove for like 2 hours just to dump as much of the 87 octane as I could and 2 fillups later, I felt it was time to switch to 93 octane. With the gears and the Steeda CAI on the way, I can't wait to see how the car wakes up! I will say though, never did a tune on a car before and that moment when the SCT x4 is rewriting the tune to the computer, its that moment where the gauges go crazy for like 5 seconds and I can hear in my mind is, "VOIDED YOUR WARRANTY! NOW YOUR SCREWED! LOL!) And then the tuner did its magic and the car worked lol
