3.73 gears and a tune?

Hey guys I just recently looked and relaxed I got the 2.73 gear ratio. I was really hoping it wasn't going to be that but it is what it is. So now I'm looking into getting the 3.73 ford racing gears. My question is though is when I get the gears installed, will I have to get a tune in order for my car to realize it has these gears? I was wanting to avoid a tune right now but if I can't then I'll just settle with it. Thanks in advance for the help!

You'll need a tune to correct the speedometer. I believe there are other devices to correct the speedometer if you don't want to tune.

Hey Tek,

Great question!

You can definitely install the gears without a tune, but to tie everything together and re-calibrate your speedometer it is highly recommended to tune the car whenever you swap your gears!

Check out the Ford Racing 3.73 Gears and BAMA X4 Tuner kit for your 3.7! It has everything you need to install the gears and it will really wake up the car. You will not be disappointed.

Take a look and let me know what you think!

WOW....SHE'S A BEAST!!! LOL ... Just running 87 octane tune. Said to wait 500 miles for a all out assault. Was getting on the interstate and kicked her turning on to the ramp. Whoa!! Lol Gassing up with 93 octane now...had a 1/4 tank. Run a 1/4 more out and refill then I'll switch tunes. I definitely think I want the new one piece DS now!! This baby is serious now!! Running 80 on the interstate your starting to carry some high rpms! Will miss the 2.73 on the interstate. More to come!

My automatic is right at 2k rpm for 60mph and 2.5k rpm for 80mph. (3.73s)

Yeah, mpg isn't a worry it's not a daily driver. As a cruiser...I think I went a little to tall. Ford might have known what it was doing when it went 3.31 on a performance package. Again it pulls unreal out of the hole....but probably a little tall for cruising.

Sorry, not trying to be picky but you really mean short, not tall.

Techincally speaking when it comes to gears, the bigger the number, the shorter they are. Taller = lower numbers.

Gears with lower numbers(example: 2.73:1) are called "taller" gears. They are given this name because a vehicle with taller gears can run faster on the highway (or race track) before the engine reaches its red line. (speed range is greater)
Gears with higher numbers(examples: 3.73:1, 4.10:1) are called "shorter" gears. Cars with shorter gears will reach red line at lower speeds.(speed range is less)
