3.73 gear upgrade

Almost 300 break in miles. I have decided they must go! Too much gear for me. I'll be going down to 3.31's or back to the 2.73's! Great fun in town, but I'm a cruiser!

First person I've heard say this! 3.31s are still pretty good but I'm sorry, if you go back to 2.73s you've bought the wrong car!

I bought a convertible with some HP! If go back to 2.73's its because I like driving fast on the highway. It's expensive to bounce around. I would love to try 3.31's....but 2.73 was a great highway gear.

Just about any car can go well past the speed limit these days. With my 2.73s I could go over our highest posted speed limit of a 100kmh in second gear. Still with 3.73s I'm doing 120 at 2400rpm, and have gone to 160kms before letting off due to the possibility of ds failure, but still could have gone far beyond that, which is highly illegal and plain out stupid on public roads. IMO other than better mpgs on the highway they suck the fun out of our cars completely, but to each their own.

3.73's in my opinion ARENT a good combo gear of highway and in town driving. Oh don't get me wrong it's got the pep....but at too big of cost on the highway.( for me) especially having a tuner now....I really think 3.31's would be ideal. Could still have some nice pick up, but not 2500 RPM's at 80!

If you have a local Ford dealer close by give a 3.31 stang a test drive and see if it's to your liking. I've had the privilege of getting seat time with 2.73s, 3.31s, 3.55s and 3.73s which made the choice easy for me, I'd try and test drive a 3.31 mustang if you can, it's a quick and cheap way to help you decide.

Why exactly did you upgrade to 3.73s in the first place? And what exactly is wrong with the 2500 RPM range that you're not liking?

I have never had the luxury of experimenting with gears. I had a 5.13 in a v-8 vega, a 4.88 in my trans am. Both too big....never had anything in the 3's. So after having the 3.73's ....something in the middle would probably give me a decent hole shot. 2500 at 80 for me is up there and your gas mileage drops huge!

Well gear swaps can be a pretty expensive boo boo if someone isn't happy. Like Die said, what is wrong with 2500 at 80? It makes it easier to pull out and pass as opposed to 2.73s that I usually had to go down a couple of gears to get anything out of the car. Also it's very well known that 3.73s will run you in that rpm range on the highway, there are many charts that will provide you rpm range with specific gear choice. For example American Muscle provides this along with a quick Google search. I hope you find what your looking for, but if it's the best mpgs you should have left the stock 2.73s in or bought a prius lol. Jk jk.

With a V8 and a 6 speed the 3:73's are on the money! From what I have read I hear 3:55 for a manual V6 and 3:31 for an automatic seem to work well. But I don't think 2500 RPM at 80 MPH sounds bad to me either!

What's needed is a 7th speed to be used for cruising with short gears.

Great idea, but we have 6 speeds...you may like cruising 80 at 2500...but I don't. . Really starts sucking the gas....unless you get down to 65. ( as proven by another thread) that's intolerable on the highway.

For a manual car on the street 3.15 would be ideal.

I guess I'm just confused as to why you went ahead with the installation of 3.73s when everything you're not liking about them is information that every single gear thread has stated in it.

I personally have only lost maybe ~10-20 miles to E on a full tank compared to when I had 2.73s.

Stock gearing is chosen to optimize fuel mileage. I'm not sure what you thought was going to happen by changing gearing and thats a pretty big jump from stock to 3:73 in a V6. If fuel mileage was important probably should have left it stock.

As I've stated... I have never had any gears in the 3 range. I believe I still want to be in the 3's just at the lower end , rather then the higher. I can only say the only "accurate" test would be to drive a car with different gears. My first gut feeling was 3.55, but AM steered me in the direction of the 3.73's. I am going to race a few guys before I unload them tho!!! I can't wait to see the panic in there face when this beast comes roaring out of the hole!!

If it's that fast out of the hole to illicit panic then your good! Leave it alone! Who cares about 6 or 7 extra bucks a week on gas? Let it eat Man! It's a Mustang! You want MPG buy a Prius! Lol

Lol...need a little more on the top end!! But if you had a 7 or 8 speed, this would be the ticket.

Top End!! You planning on running the Bonneville salt flats? 80MPH at 2500 RPM you have plenty of top end left for all practical purposes!

Loved running a 100-110 on the interstate for short bursts. Never going to happen with the 3.73. To each his own....the 3.31 ford used in there "performance package" probably makes good sense.

Got to be honest man, I think you bought the wrong car. Gas mileage is never a reason to buy a Mustang. I have the 6 speed and 2.73 and it's the worst!! I have my appointment on Monday for the swap, I can't wait to get rid of these gears. I mean what kind of sports car lets you yo 65 mph in second gear?

You can hit 100 np with 3.73s?!! Just have to watch your ds. I'm really not sure about your decision as to why you went 3.73s in the first place though? And why would you think you can't hit 100 with 3.73s? Looks like more research is needed on your end before you decide on any next gear swap.
It's kinda like buying Roush exhaust and saying, damn I was looking for something quiet!

Totally got the right car.... But the 3.73's just don't do it for me. Hope you love them! Probably will go with the 3.31's.

Agreed, 2.73s IMO have no business being in a mustang! Our car should have come stock with 3.31s with the PP coming with 3.55s/3.73s.

You can not predict what a car will be like when you pick a gear....unless you have run that gear before. I'm not freaking out....lol calm down guys. Overall evaluation of the way I like my car....3.73's are not it.....that saying you may try them and love them. Definitely still love my mustang!

Test drive a 3.31, if you don't like them you'll be the first 3.7. NA Mustang owner to pay for a 2.73 gear install lol.

I just switched from 2.73 to 3.73 in my V6 auto. Perfection! I couldn't have made a better choice. After a tuner, the gear change is the best mod for the money.

If the OP doesn't like his 3.73s, it's his car and his choice. Someone will buy them and love them!

Are the rears the same between the v6 and the v8 (interchangeability)?

Yup and include a factory optional 3.55! I wonder if that will impact dealer converting earlier models to 3.55?

I love the hole shot just not enough on the upper end for me. So I am going to have to compromise the hole shot a little bit...to find the mix I like.
