My RTR decklid panel officially rusted!

Popped the trunk earlier to transport some water and this happened. A strip of paint/powder coating appeared and revealed a pure piece of rust! Ouch lol.

Hopefully the plastic version they're in the works of developing will be infinitely better than this one.

My buddy's did this and exactly the reason why I stayed far away from this one but if they make a plastic one I'll be a buyer of it.

It's only been 5 months, that sucks! I made a comment in your original thread about the deck lid rusting because of the holes you drilled, didn't think it would be the deck lid panel that rusted though. My in-progress RTR Decklid is getting the best reactions on the road Curious to see what it looks like under their if you decide to remove it.

Not sure you linked the right thread lol. But yea, I'm contemplating returning to stock. Only problem is I love the current look of my stang with this panel.

That was your deck lid panel thread I commented in that I linked. Did you have another?

---------- Post added at 04:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:43 PM ----------

Either way that really sucks, spend that kind of money on a product and have it go bad that quick.

Just get it powder coated. Shouldn't cost that much. They will blast it first anyway to prep it.

Really sucks man. I see why you were trying to sell it to me for 400 bucks now. Lol

It is supposedly powder coated from RTR. Everyone I've asked around town wants more than the thing is worth to redo it...

Hey, my mistake. I see what you were talking about now. On mobile, the thread you linked brought me to some gas pedal thread. I'm on my computer now and see the proper link!

Yea, it sucks I'll definitely let you know what it looks like underneath, should I go ahead and remove it.

When I was going to buy the forever out of stock one on AM I swore it said it was stainless steel!? If it's just steel it's WAY over priced!

Guys, RTR products are rips of stuff already made. Their springs are SR, which is AM. Their mufflers are magnaflow streets. Only a few things are their own. And then it's overpriced for what is it. Stay away.

Starting to see the light on rtr. I'm going to make a rtr copy at my shop out of stainless, they way rtr should have done it, and throw it in our paint shop for either a matte or gloss black finish.

5 months old....yeah it can be fixed but your working with a ****ty material, CRS or steel, no thanks. Better off waiting for a plastic or stainless version. For over 200$ for a piece of painted "steel" they should have used stainless steel IMO. Looks great but **** quality.

I'd prefer that material over plastic or stainless. Nothing wrong with it. It just needs to be sealed properly from the get.

Why would you prefer a corrosive material over a non corrosive material? Especially at that price? To each their own.

Your logic is off a bit though. Sure I agree the quality sucks (because they left bare metal exposed). But saying it's better that it's made of plastic so it won't rust seems silly to me. If car companies left a fender or decklid untreated it would rust also. Should we make them out of plastic also? Or just make sure they are treated properly? See what I'm saying?

Yes, but I see many cars rust up here, around wheel wells ect, but never a plastic bumper. My point being if that same rtr decklid had been made out of ss or plastic it would not have corroded and looked fine even if it wasn't perfectly protected, see what I'm saying lol. A decklid is not a structural part so plastic would be great for longevity. Plastic just like what our bumpers are made of will.never rust and look as good as the rest of the steel body, I don't see how a plastic or stainless decklid would be worse than a steel corrosive decklid, so for that I see holes in your logic. At the end of the day steel will always be more corrosive compared ss or plastic.
Seeing the ops pics is enough to make me pass on the rtr decklid.

With all joking aside. I will help you do your seats if you wanted man. It's about 3 hours worth of work (fun I think). So if your really serious about doing it hit me up. As far as the panel goes, I can hook you up with my powder coat guy. Again let me know and I can shoot you his info. He did my wheels on my last truck for 75 each and they looked amazing and it was like 4 days turn around (that was for gun metal color, so I'm sure gloss black would be faster as its way more common).

Yeah so I see your up in Canada now. I imagine their are significant rust issues there. We will just agree to disagree. You can have a plastic one and I will collect all the sad rusted ones 😵

What a piece of junk.

How disappointing. RTR should be ashamed of that especially considering how much they charge for it.

I think even wood rusts up here lol.
Seriously though I thought in AM's description of the RTR decklid panel they said it was stainless steel, if it's true can there be different models of this thing, or did AM post some bad info about it? This has been a mod I've been trying to get my hands on for over a year with no success as it's been sold out everywhere.

Yes so here is the info from AM. Op if you purchased this from AM maybe there is something they can do for you even though they don't carry the item anymore.
While not all stainless steels are created equally there is no way a 5 month old decklid should have that much corrosion due to poor paint considering the price they ask for it.

I know this (welder for 20 years) but considering it is only 5 months old and painted it should have not completely corroded they way it has on the surface. The lower the grade the higher the carbon content, hence the word "stain less" I'm not buying that the ops decklid is stainless at all.
When ever your going to use a metal that might or will be exposed to the elements stainless steel is a better alternative to steel, but it's more costly.
