I don't know where you live, but in VA the legal limit for the fronts is 50%. I've been on 35% in the fronts for a year now and have not had a single problem.
I say go for it, what's the worst they could do? Tell you to take it off. In my state it's illegal to have the exhaust system louder than factory. That doesn't stop them...
It's not worth it man. It says your in Cali, born and raised there myself. Cops won't bother a soccer mom with tint but they WILL harass a guy in a mustang. The ticket is over 100.00 even after you take it off. If you don't prove you took it off it's more than that. I probably paid over 1000 bucks in tint tickets before I said the hell with it. But my mom in her Volvo with 20% never once had an issue. Just leave it like it is.
I might be wrong about this but here in Texas when you get your inspection sticker they have a meter tool that checks how dark the tint is. So I think rather your problem with cops it would be with getting an inspection sticker.

I live in SoCal and have had tint for over 10 years, never an issue. I got pulled over for a tinted plate cover but never the windows...as a matter of fact when I got pulled over the cop even reminded me the window tint was illegal but never wrote me a ticket for it. One of my sons friends dad is CHP and he said even a lot of the other cops do it do, which I believe why they don't write many tickets for it, at least not here.
yep here in NJ it's illegal to do it too... such a ridiculously stupid law. either way, i wont bother bc if i do get caught, yeah, then I have to take it off and waste like 200 bucks. no thanks.

I run 20% on the front side windows on my Flex and have never been pulled over. Find the right inspection station too and *somehow* your car will still pass.
Having said that though, I wouldn't go illegal on my Mustang because it's just asking for trouble. When I get my tint I'm keeping it within tolerance.
I live in NorCal (Antioch) as well, have only been pulled over once for tint on front windows. Not really a big deal. I paid 25 bucks after I got it signed off by chp.
do they crack down on tint where you live? the legal limit here is 35% but i've been rocking 5% for 4 years now... also i've been pulled over a handful of times and never sited for the tint lol
This really depends on where and what you drive. Here in NJ, I know plenty of people that drive with dark tint and have no problems. I also know people who have been pulled over so often they took the tint off. If you live in an area where they have random stops to check inspection stickers, like I do and it seems you do, I wouldn't risk it. If you live in the middle of nowhere, it's probably OK to do it.
I think any added tint is illegal in California, but like after market exhausts, it seems lightly enforced at best. It used to just be a 14-days to fix it equipment violation with no fine. Didn't realize there was a fine now.
I've had 45% tint on my front side windows since a year and half now. So far I've not had a second look from police.
With my previous Lexus, I had similar tint on the windows for 11 years and 120,000+ miles without problem.
Glad I live in the Phx. area. Don't know what the law is...but they don't stop anyone no matter how dark ...or so it seems. I have Limo Tint on the back windshield & quarter windows, 35% on the Front Windshield & door windows. Also, all my lights are blacked out including side markers & turn signals & I have Roush Exhaust so it's kind of loud.
What worries me is I want to drive it to Chicago this summer & I don't know which states I'll be illegal in.
Lol.
With the car sitting in the shade, and the sun screen installed on the windshield, it makes it look like your side windows are tinted!
I bought my car with the sides already tinted from the previous owner. The only time that I've been pulled over, I rolled down BOTH of the windows and the cop never said a word about the tint.
I am always worried that I will get that one cop who wants to make an issue of it though.
And you guys that are tinting your windshields?!?
That wouldn't last very long in the places that I have lived in California! In fact, I can only recall ever seeing only a few cars with windshield tint.
Just tint the front windows then roll them down while you are driving around
