Whiney gears

Does anyone else's gears seem to whine when you drive? It's so loud and very noticeable if the music isn't on.

I had gear whine when I got my 3.73s installed but took it back to the shop and they fixed it. I could only tell I had whine when I installed my one piece driveshaft so the two piece is kind of forgiving to the whine I would guess. Are you running aftermarket gears or are they the stock ones?

Whine on accel or decel? I have a bit of decel whine that isn't bad. If you have accel whine that's definitely coming from the gears, that isn't normal... might suggest previous owner had a botched gear install.

They whine only while my foot is on the gas. Once I take my foot off of the gas the whining pretty much stops

That's the drive side of your ring gear. The backlash wasn't adjusted properly. Probably too tight.

I'll teach you guys basic terms so you know what to ask or look out for. I do gears on 8.875's, father has two chevelle a I've set up.

Backlash is the space between the ring gear and pinion gear. Provided the pinion depth is set correctly, then you shim the differential left or right to get closer or further away. You want your gear teeth to look like this picture below. Right in the middle of the coast (inside of ring gear tooth) and the drive side (outside of tooth) to be in the center.

Pinion depth is setup first, you just put the shim on the pinion gear, install and tighten all the slack out of the driveshaft flange. Then measure the force it takes to turn the pinion. 10-15 is for used bearings. 20-25 for new bearings. Once you tighten up the nut so there is no slack, measure and tighten till you reach the in/lb measurement. This is your bearing preload. Click image for larger version

Is this something that ford would take care of since my car is still under the 36k mile warrant?

Unless there are aftermarket gears in there, it should be covered by the drivetrain warranty.

That said, I had my gears replaced under warranty (bearings failed after dealer "adjusted" the fluid level) but yhe preload was so far off that I wound up paying a mechanic to do a full rebuild.

So if you do warranty it, choose your dealer carefully or you might be worse off!

Its funny you posted this, I happened to notice this yesterday. I don't think mine is gear whine though. It happens on deceleration and I think its coming from the tranny. I never noticed it until yesterday for some reason.

I think that might be gear whine because I had it on acceleration and deceleration. Might be something else but just letting you know what I dealt with on my gear change.

Gear whine is usually like drone of an exhaust. You know it's there.

The previous owner must have swapped the gears if they are whining like you say.

Lol but they still went ahead and did the install? That's not a really smart idea for the person doing the install

Just get the gears changed out soon as possible because I don't know if they can cause damage or not if not installed right. Honestly I would of been pissed if they said that. I would of been on the news next day for breaking that shop down lol

Then someone needs to check their carrier and backlash.

Usually you reuse the pinion shim, because logically, it was setup with it oem no problems.

You should have the shop pay for gears and gear oil that you brought to them too
