Just a scratch

So I was in line to leave my highschool parking lot today and a fellow mustang driver decided to back into me, there's just a small scratch on the rear bumper but I was wondering if there is a possibility to get money or a respray of the bumper Click image for larger version

If some one hits you youre going to use paint from Autozone? I say hell no to that!! He hit you he needs to make it right. I wouldn't accept anything less than making look like it did before he hit you.

Two days after I got my car some one threw a rock at it and hit my passenger door. I carry 100.00 deductible for collision. It went to the body shop for repair. It was very small and he was surprised I wanted to even fix it, but I wouldn't settle for anything less. They billed my insurance company 1200.00 for the repairs...trust me there was no Auto Zone paint going on my car.

You should have got his insurance right then and there. It is his fault so his insurance pays for it. Take it to Ford and get the best/most expensive paint job quote ad give it to his insurance.

Yeah pretty much. Call your insurance and talk to them about it and then of course get in contact with his insurance to get the claim going asap since it's always a process and will take time. You want to get the ball rolling.

Don't know if the insurance companies in your state work it any different but in my state...
If the other person is totally at fault you can collect directly from the other persons company or go through your company.
Going through your company they will typically pay you all but the deductible until they get it from the other persons company.
HOWEVER, lately I'm hearing that even when you are not at fault it still MAY have some effect on your insurance premiums.
I wouldn't go through your insurance company. It generally pays not to go thru insurance companies for small damages. Try to get the person that hit you to pay for it.
It would definitely be in the at fault drivers interest to pay for the damage out of their pocket rather than get surcharges on future insurance coverage. I'm sure their parents will agree.

How much did your insurance premiums go up the following years?

Nothing, I've never had an accident. Collision has nothing to do with your rates going up, only comprehensive.

I said IF NOT.
He could replace the entire bumper for a lot less than $1200.00
And it's not body paint were talking about here.
Looks like the at fault party has insurance so it's a no brainer. Get an estimate and file a claim with his insurance. A police report would have been best.

Mine just had $8400.00 repairs on it. Not my fault so no increase in insurance.

I understand that. My point being that if some one were to hit me, no spray paint is the answer. If screwed up and had a high deductible I might go the "cheap" route. Never ever if its some one elses fault.

I can confirm, any claim, regardless of liability, can impact your rates. Source - I work in claims.

Well there you have it!
I thought it may vary from state to state.

Comprehensive claims can impact your rates as well. You won't get hit with a surcharge but it can impact your rates. I've seen it wipe out good claims history discounts. Also if you have multiple comprehensive claims that can make you a higher risk.

Or they have no insurance, no assets and refuse to pay. I'd still buy a new bumper but he's in high school and cost may or may not be an issue. Was just trying to help.

It does depend on state to state on how your insurance company views the incident. I would def try to make the other party pay out of pocket if their willing... if not than hey go with the insurance but def get a good job done.

I had the exact thing happen to my car. I called the police and got a report. Called his insurance company and they said pick a body shop. The one I picked has s lifetime warranty. His insurance paid for a rental car as well while in the shop.

OP, it's one of those things that you will get 200 opinions on. In the end, if the kid didn't offer to fix it, you know you only have a couple of options. That's to either call and get a report and let insurance handle it or take it out of his a**.

If it's just paint, they'll sand and respray. If it's into the plastic they will replace the whole cover.

I would make sure it's in the plastic lol. No sense in getting a repainted part. Also if you do that and want a different bumper you can usually talk to the body shop and they will have insurance pay for an original send it back and get you whatever you want. If your new one cost more you pay the difference

You can just tell by looking. If it's paint only u will see smith plastic. If u see rough scratchy feeling plastic than its in the plastic 😃

American muscle has a lot of good stylish bumpers and all sorts of after market items for these cars. I would check there first and maybe a few other places to make sure your not missing something special. In my experience a.m. Has the best looking parts but that's just my opinion

They will not replace the bumper for that damage guys. I'd bet 100 bucks. They will either fix that one (which needs little to no real work to fix) or they will get a remanufactured bumper. Which is basically someone else's previously scraped bumper like this one, they just swap them out and then they repair this one on your car and sell it to the next guy. Makes it a little faster. Basically the body shop only has to do a final prep and paint then re install. It's done in a day sometimes 2.

New bumpers only come when they are ripped, torn, deformed, mount points broken ect.

I guess it depends on the shop. Most shops I deal with are like "insurance monies, lolololol get this dude a new bumper!" The new one may be "recycled" but a quality shop won't use a repaired AND recycled part. Most likely it'll be a pristine part where the car it came off of was hit at the other end. Why would they repair a recycled part when they could have tried to repair the original?
