BBK Shorty Ceramic Headers

So I didn't notice until today. But after installing the headers, I hear an extremely faint tick tick sound at idle. I try listening to both sides where the headers are and it sounds like the sound is coming from both sides? I normally drive with the radio on but didn't today and that is when I heard it. With the radio on, you wouldn't even hear it.

I checked that all of the bolts were tight. I took everything apart and redid the headers. They are using OEM Ford gaskets. Everything is tight. I am not noticing any crazy performance issues or anything. The tick tick gets a little louder as I accelerate past 30 MPH.

Is this normal with these headers? I have not drove my car much since the install due to wisdom tooth surgery. I did not hear this when I initially did the install.

Idk, it just doesn't seem normal to me.

Yeah I never understood why people reuse the stock gaskets. You have new gaskets provided by bbk. Use them.

Brand new OEM gaskets are under $20. They are going to be better since they are metal instead of steel core with graphite.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure he bought new OEM gaskets.

If that's what he was saying the ok I may have miss understood the other thing is did you use a you torque them to spec or just use a rachet till you could not get it tighter and try spraying then with soapy water where the connect to see if it starts bubbling

I did not try the soap method. I will take a look at that.

I went by the BBK install document and it doesnt mention the bolt's torque specs. In fact, their document doesn't get really specific at all. Like tools needed/size of bolts, etc.

I am no wiz at bolts so m10 means nothing to me. A 13 and a 17 would have sufficed.

I would look up stock torque specs and use a torque wrench all that needs to be torque to spec

I get this sound too with the chrome headers. I am not very happy with the bbk shorty headers. Not much power gained if any and the sound is close to the stock headers.

my headers + h-pipe made a ticking sound. I figured it just came down to a unique noise the unique combination made and never thought anything of it. Granted, mine is a 5.0.

Is there any sealant or anything i can put around where the header meets the engine just to be safe? With the hot temps, I am not sure what can withstand the heat ok.

Shouldnt need a liquid sealant on the exhaust, and i also doubt there is anything that would take the heat.

if the gasket are metal, normally you can reuse them, if they aren't toss them and get new ones.

I did buy new ones. I mentioned this in another thread when I first did this. LOL. Idk why everyone is mentioning me using old ones.

Yea those OEM ones were $10 per side on Ford and the shipping and tax was like another $10 O_O

I sometimes buy from other dealers in Austin and just get them shipped to me. You should be able to search for other dealerships on the Ford Parts website.

The increased sound is normal from what I've seen of people installing headers. Just not as much deadening as the the heavy cast stockers provide.

Never heard of anyone ever being able to torque those nuts on the BBK headers. Is it even possible?

This just sounds soo wrong.

But in a sense, I agree. Tell me how you got a torque wrench to some of the bolts on these shorty headers I barely got a little basic wrench in on some of them. Probably why BBK doesn't have these specs in their guide. More of a "good luck getting these tight as it is" type thing.

That's my exact point. How would you get a torque wrench on those nuts?
In fact, I looked in the 2013 Repair Manual and in the torque chart for Exhaust manifold nuts, it was blank with a reference to a note which read, "Refer to the procedure in this section". I couldn't find what they were talking about.
I'm going to look a bit further just for the hell of it.

Yea I hear you. When I showed the tech that helped me, he almost wanted to quit after examing the new headers. lol. He said the way the tubes looped near the bolt holes told him it was going to be a PITA. HAHA

It's probably not even leaking.
On the other hand, did you put back all 12 nuts? JK

Yea maybe that person was just in the wrong thread then. These are the 11-14 3.7s. Stock manifolds are very restrictive looking compared to even the shorties.

It really is. Spent hours searching for the right setup because I didn't want raspy nails in a blender sound. Its perfect IMO.
