Ordered 3.73s!!!

After weeks of thinking and contemplating, I finally ordered the 3.73 gear kit from AM. Came out to about $263 with the forum discount.

Not many shops can do the install here in Austin, TX. And some of the shops that claim they can, are pretty sketchy. The shop I am going with is Pro Modular Performance. They specialize with Mustangs. Quote for the install is $450. I will be taking it in mid June to get these put in.

I currently have 3.31s. So I am not sure what gain/change I can expect since most people that have upgraded had 2.73s. Either way, I am sure I won't be upset.

As far as RPMs with 3.73s - I currently keep my car in 5th gear on the highway because I LOVE the sound of my Exhaust. So in 6th I should be in the same boat so no biggie.

I already requested an updated tune from Bama with 3.73s. I will also be adding in my BMR rear LCAs. Now to wait 3 more weeks or so.

Sweet!

That's not bad at all for install. I don't know how you'll be able to wait 3 weeks though. You're a better man than me. I have zero patience.

Oh trust me, if I could get them done now, I would. But a friend of mine is paying for the labor as my bday present. So I HAVE to wait D:

Lol. Yea I am lucky. My wife is buying me the Accel Super Coils in July as a late bday gift. Just looking for small things to help with throttle response. And if it burns the fuel more completely, even better.

Not sure to be honest. What do people do with their old 3.31s? I know most people trash the 2.73s.

Well if you're trying to get rid of them send me some pics of the pattern on them and we can figure something out.

What gear oil are you using?
My shop used Royal Purple, no friction modifier required. Is it more expensive..... yep, is it better than the rest? Who knows, but its purple lol.
Its been a year and a half, no noise or problems. I also use it in my transmission.

I use royal purple in my engine. I also added the additive for the radiator. I am using royal purple for the gears also. I got the install kit and an extra quart.

Your starting to piss me off now. I can't keep up with you when you keep getting all these new things for your car...side scoops, chin splitter, now gears. Damn you. Lol

Seriously though your car is looking great and can't wait to see what's next.

P.S. I need friends like yours also that buy me cool things as well.

Haha. Yea i was broke for a bit due to moving but since then, it has been on!

Plans are to get the gears in June. Sometime between June and July I wanna get the Pony Package grille. Cut and clamp x pipe and super coils in July. Finish the sound system in August. Then Brembo front brakes in September.

After that, i cant think of anything else my car needs besides maintenance. Maybe get the 13 GT500 rims next year. But the mods from here are quite pricey (FI, full sport suspension, engine rebuilding). So i will probably pass on all that.

Plus for the next few years I need to start saving for a down payment towards a house. So the car will cease to get any more upgrades after this year unless the item is bought for me as a gift or something.

Nice list there! I hear you on saving for a house. Think we might be moving to another state next year. So looks like my mods may be done for a little while myself. But there is still time for a few more this year! Lol

For sure. My first goal which was converting the car from a base to a premium is finished -$3000. Now the cosmetics are about done - $1500. Now all that is left is a few performance mods. I will probably have about 10k wrapped up in my car. It is definitely everything i want for now

That's crazy. I've done pretty much just appearance. Spent about $4000 just in that myself. Gonna be brutal when I get into performance mods next. Gotta love it!!!

Yup. My car came with a more GT oriented stock suspension. So for what I have, and since I dont track, this is good enough for me. All i did with the suspension was the rear LCAs.

That's a lot of dough for a gear swap man. There easy enough to do yourself if you have basic mechanic tools. I've done three on these mustangs and asking as you shim it and check the wear pattern your good to go. They are very easy to do .
One has 75000 miles since it was done and he beats the pi** out of it and there still holding just fine.

Just my .02

Save money and do them yourself

Why not fast ford? If u guys can do headers or axle backs you can do a gear swap. There's several good articles online on how to do them. That's how i learned and been doing them for five years now with no problems.

I would but the headers was the last mod I was going to help do. My lower 3 discs in my back are bad so when I work on my car, I am usually in the bed the next day on some pain meds. Lol.

I make enough money so I will let the pros handle it. No guess work.

Tbh I don't comfortable with this attempt. I've watched some videos before i had the swap done and it scared the hell out of me lol. Then I watched some videos of bad gear installs and how they were whining and loud and decided to let the pros have this one. I really don't mind getting my hands dirty, did my own headers and other small things to my Mustang, and just did the alternator on my winter beater Mazda protege, but gears seem to have too many things that can go wrong with the install if not done properly for my level of mechanics.
Hats off to you, i just don't have the balls lol.

Makes sense on the back pain. Sorry about your luck.

Guess it helps I've been wrenching on cars and doing full restorations on them from child hood learning with my dad until now. But I know what you mean fast ford. They do look tricky but there really not.

Hardest part is making sure you have a very even rub. As long as the rub is right and everything's tite. You would be fine

Once you do a gear job, you'll have done them all...

only thing you really need is, a press, bearing remover, dial indicator, and hand tools....

Ask a Ford DLR what they charge to install gears
I'm guessing they are ford racing product

Appreciate it. With my luck, 1 small thing would be off and then I would have to take it in to get it done. Inevitabally paying labor and buying a new install kit. lol

to be honest, I would be too scared to know their price. LOL. When I asked for leather seats and install labor, they quoted me $4,000. NO THANKS! Then another $1,200 if I wanted the stock Mustang rocker stripes. LOL
