Time to go to a shop

Driving home from work today on I-75 I heard what sounded like a belt squelling for maybe 2 seconds. Shortly after I smell something burning. So I pull off and I have a clunking noise from the rear end with a slight howl. It has been just over 2 months since switching to 3.73. So bad seal? Leading to no fluids to lubricate? Night time and no garage to check. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Can you see any evidence of gear oil having leaked out?
I'd definitely take it back to the shop that did the gear installation.

I did not as it had been raining. I'll be checking the oil level in the morning along with excessive play from pinion bearing

Could be a bearing failed or fluid leak. Let us know what you find out.

Sounds like a lot of you guys need to find better gear shops. This reared has been out for 20+ years and no real gear installer should have any issues with them. I've never babied gears after installing them. I usually put 40 miles on them as soon as I'm done with a gear swap. Then I dump and flush fluid and after that there good to go. I've never had any issues as long as quality parts are used there should never be an issue. Just my .02. Don't know if you guys have used cheap parts or just terrible installs.

I have a list of most of the shops in my area in another thread. I called all of them. Most charge 700-1200 for just labor. And most admitted they rarely do them. It depends on your area. If there are alot of modded cars in your area, then chances are, the shops are more experienced (assuming they did a majority of the mods).

However, not really alot of this going on in Cedar Park, TX. So most shops just do normal maintenance stuff. And I cannot drive my car 1-2 cities away, drop it off, get it worked on, then hope in the following weeks I can pick it up.

I don't think people realize that everyone's resources and circumstances are a bit different.

No I realize it lol. But it's worth a drive if it avoids all of the issues you have had? Am I wrong to assume that if you cud do yours over again you would take it to someone who actually knows gears.

That is true. But the next biggest city that is nearby is San Antonio. Takes about an hour to two to get out of Austin due to traffic, then another hour to get to SA, and the time within SA to get to the shop. So couple that with my 10 hour work days, it doesn't fit in to my schedule to go some place far. I rarely get time off since I am the only IT person at my work location.

Almost no shops will do a full gear install on a Saturday. So that really limits my options. So I have to pay to play with what I have available.

Don't worry. It will get done right one of these days....LOL

This time I made sure the work was warrantied....

Livernois is a pretty reputable shop. Depending on how long since you've had the work done I would take it back and at least call'em.

Not sure what year Mustang you have and just to let you know that I lost my pinion seal at 7600 miles. My Ford dealer replaced it and said this is pretty usual. The mechanic told me that Ford's OE seal is mostly plastic and that the "New Revised Piece" is metal. So far so good.

What shop in livernois are you referring to? I don't know the area? I could recommend an excellent shop around flint. My friends dad has owned it since we were little and he's always done great work.

A small place out in Durand. Can't remember the name of his shop or if he's still in business. It's been a few years since I've been that way. Never seen your car around flint before.

She is not a daily driver as I store her during the winter and as I'm retired and on disability I don't get to drive her as much as I would like.

Ya I've been there in the past just not my cup of tea. I really don't even do back to the bricks much. Maybe 20 min or so before I take off and cruise.

Well heres the update. Got my car back. The pinion bearing and seal got destroyed wear pattern on the ring was toasted. The shop I went to was fantastic. Half the price of the original install. Even the guys at the place were shocked at the damge and couldn't figure out what the installer at Livernois did.

I'm not covering there *** because I've never even went to that shop but.

It is possible that when the carrier bearing went it caused a lot of slop in the system thus trashing everything inside. Could have just been a fluke bad bearing or bad instal. Who knows man.

Glad it's fixed though
