2014 Datalogging Question

When you datalogged, did you do 3 WOT runs?

And did you do the Step Tests?

Thanks, Ted

Before i go any further, can you elaborate on what you mean by "step tests?"

According to SCT/Bama, there's a stage where you hold the throttle at predesignated RPMs. The instructions suggest that this be done on a dyno. That's what raised the question, what if you don't have access to a dyno?

Here are the instructions:

Step Test - 20-30sec at each step
A step tests is used to provide information in ‘steps’ of 500 rpm’s about how the vehicle is running at part throttle speeds. Step logs must be done in a safe location or in a controlled environment, such as on a dyno. While driving your vehicle and logging, hold the engine speed as steadily as you can at the following RPMs each for 30 seconds. It is important that the throttle position and rpm's do not increase or decrease
1500 RPM
2000 RPM
3000 RPM
3500 RPM
4000 RPM

This kind of stuff confused me also. Because no reputable shops around me have one either and to try this on a highway would be suicide. Austin drivers are like kamikaze pilots.

Ahh, thats for a MAF cal, it can be done slightly differently, but i guess thats what they want.

1. As far as the three WOT pulls, yes, its important to have 3 pulls to average out any odd occurrences in one or two logs. For the love of God, do three separate pulls. I've had people send me like a 10 minute log where they do a pull, turn around, line up, do another, blah blah blah and its thousands of lines of data in Excel and i have to try to find the pulls ... For the sanity of your tuner, just line up at 2500 rpm, start the log - wait just a second so you know its recording, floor it, hit redline, end the log. That way, 95% of what is in that log is the pull, and your tuner doesnt have to waste a ton of time on it.

2. As far as that "step test," its basically to calibrate the MAF. I've never seen one like that, and i personally feel its a little excessive, but i guess thats what they want. Typically, a MAF breaks down your fuel trims on certain breakpoints based on a G/s of air value. This helps smooth things out from idle, part throttle, Wot...
Typically you'll start at ~1500 rpm or so in 3rd gear, and then just vvvveeeerrryyy slowly and steadily increase the throttle to slowly cover all those break points and allow your fuel trims to be logged for adjustment. Probably worth a phone call to them at the very least, since that step test sounds pretty cumbersome, but that is important data.

Well, I made 3 WOT passes yesterday and recorded them. I sent the 3 files to Bama. I haven't heard anything back yet. NOTE: I'd suggest that data logging should be a 2 person proposition. With the laptop on the passenger's seat, it was a bit awkward clicking on the computer's start button, running through the gears, and then trying to click on the STOP button whle slowing down. If Bama wants more data, I don't think I'll take any chances. My car actually runs very well. I'll keep you posted as to the tune progress.

Yeah, its a royal pain, i actually bought my new computer with tuning in mind. Its one that folds completely around (think opposite of how a laptop normally closes) and the top is a touch screen, so i can just click things in my lap.

Its not that hard to have a device that records data that can later be uploaded to a computer, i dont know why SCT wont hop on that train ...

Hey OP if you're to have any questions shoot the Bama Team a call directly and they can walk you through this. Thanks for the help here Volt - Saying that it's cumbersome is accurate but just as you said it's needed data to ensure that everything is working at 100%

Alex

Alex

I already sent the logs to Bama a couple of days ago.

I'm still waiting to hear back from them.

Well, Paul at BAMA said they can't do data logging without a Step Test, and I don't have access to a dyno, so I'll have to do without a datalogged tune.

Does MPT, or the other tuners require a Step Test to data log?

MPT just had us do the test i described, where you start low in 3rd and just slowly accelerate the cover those breakpoints.

Yea Neutral is what I meant. For some reason I thought step tests you had to actually be driving the car so they can see the a/f ratio throughout the curve and such.

Did the test in neutral give them all that though? Or anything besides your gas tank emptying and annoyed neighbors? LOL!

I could totally see my car being keyed in the morning. HAHA!

Yea if the only thing that was off was your idling then I can see that. Unless they can dial stuff in an alternate method.
