That hesitation tho

i've seen before that i think someone said it was an effect of the DOHC, but i can't remember or if i'm just making it up....

but i'm sure you've all felt that hesitation, let's say where you're flooring it in 2nd or something, and even though you're flooring it, the power doesn't really kick in until the mid to high RPM range, and then all is good.

i'm all, 'vtec just kicked in.' :p

but seriously ,what causes this exactly?

3.7L 4V Ti-VCT V6 engine

The new 3.7L 4V Ti-VCT V6 engine achieves an industry-exclusive 305 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. of torque while delivering an EPA-estimated 31 hwy MPG*. That’s due in part to twin independent variable cam timing (TiVCT) which allows variable control of intake valve closing. This capability optimizes combustion at full load to provide improved power and low speed torque. It also enables variable valve overlap, which provides better fuel economy and optimizes cold start operation with improved exhaust emissions.

**copied and pasted from v6mustangperformance.com

If you want more low end grunt to get into your RPM band faster, look into installing a set of gears. 3.55 and up will get rid of most of the hesitation.

And a good tune will help along with gears.

it doesn't seem to do it every time though..so it's cam timing pretty much? it's like sometimes it'll be a bit hesitant, then it just jumps to life and bam.

idk if i'm going to do anything big on the car like a tune or gears, but i was just curious what exactly did this. thanks!

If you're still running the stock 2.73s, that has a lot to do with it. I know exactly what you're talking about though cause I'm running stock gears as well. I like it though because there is more time spent in the powerband compared to lower gears.

Yup, gears and shorties will give you the most low end torque.
Only reason I haven't done shorties is because I'm going turbo here shortly after I finish the motor.

The turbo manifolds kind of look like shorties?

Even with 3.31 gears, mine will do this from time to time.

The valve train layout (OHV, SOHC, DOHC), cam phasing and gearing has nothing to do with this issue.

The issue the OP is describing is simply throttle by wire. Basically even if you have the gas pedal floored, the throttle may not be completely open until the computer in the car tells it to open 100%. Most cars with electronically controlled throttles will have this issue in one way or another.

A tune will help this issue but will still not completely remove it.

Going with lower gears (3.55, 3.73, 4.10) will make the issue harder to feel but it will still be there.

If you have a premium car or a wideband, watch it, when this happens the AFR won't change to indicate full throttle, until you feel the car really start to accelerate.

Interesting. I thought this was adjusted through a tune as well? So if you have a tune, how does this help? Just curious. Never seen these

Yes it still helps. It just ups the voltage. The tune only does so much

THANK YOU. I knew this was part of the reasoning. it just feels like it's not kicking in, and i knew gears weren't the issue because i thought I saw someone talk about this somewhere before. it was always a computer issue. awesome.
