why would a spare on the front cause wear on the trans (mission?)

If it's front wheel drive and the spare is not full sized is what he was saying I do believe

Oxford is correct. If the cars fwd and you have two different tire size on the front than the cars transmit ion it constantly working harder than normal and than its designed to run at.

Same thing happens to the differential on a rwd car if u run a spare on the back.
