Put the stock brakes to the test today

I was cruising along in a 45 mph zone and was zoning out when I realized the stop light about 20 feet ahead of me was red. I slammed the breaks HARD and my Stang stopped on a dime, with no tire squelch and only one "pop" of the ABS. I ended up about 6 feet into the intersection but hopefully it wasn't enough to get a damn ticket from the big brother camera.

I felt like a dumba$$ but overall I was VERY impressed with the braking system.

Now if I can just figure out where the rattle is coming from in my driver side dash! lol

did your stang make that really loud banging noise from the abs? my abs is so loud that it sounds like the entire car is vibrating and banging lol. people say it's normal.

Nope, mine only made the typical "pop" that any ABS makes... and that was only once. I was super impressed with mine. I got a 14 with the Performance Package though so not 100% sure if the brakes are the same as a non PP?

I've had to do a panic stop on the highway cruising at about 80...brakes definitely saved my bacon. Somebody a bunch of cars up had slowed down for no real reason and there was that rubber band effect on the traffic.

Might be the surround chrome rings, those tend to be lose and rattle a lot. I think the brakes on the mustang are good enough, but sometimes I feel like I need to upgrade to brembos or get better pads.

Yeah I got goodyears that are noisey as hell but the grip in dry conditions is killer.

Ill look at the chrome trim. Its driving me nuts!!! Lol

My stock breaks lasted okay for autocross. But one day at the track (about 2 hours of high speed, hard breaking effort) did them in. They weren't worn out, but they just didn't grip well anymore. Guess they got too hot. Anyway, simple upgrade to Hawks and the grip is very, very impressive and they are quiet. I got the Street Performance once, not the noisy race ones, but they survived another long day at the track and numerous autocross days without a problem or excessive wear.

Overall I agree -- stock breaks are really good, even if I needed better pads for my use case.

I was in the same boat yesterday.......I was about the same speed and although I'm not sure of the distance but it couldn't have been too much more than 20'....the Mustang stopped dead even with the crosswalk.....the Brembo's in front and GT500's out back brought her to a complete stop very quickly....no noise though. The Goodyear F1's are terrific in dry and warm weather....and not worth driving in the rain or cold weather.

I've been researching the hell out of tire reviews since I plan on selling the PP wheels & tires. I'm leaning hard towards the continental extreme grip all season. There is review after review of how these actually perform as close to a winter tire as a all season can get and they rate very high in dry and wet as well. They aren't the prettiest as far as tread but I'll let my new wheels get all the attention.


Though I might just go winter and summer, which extends the life of both so in the end it's really not anymore expensive.

For winter driving I'll put my Brembo wheels back on....although the Pirelli tires aren't much better.........they are some.
When my F1's go away I'll be switching to Michelin's.

what "pop" does ABS make? i've never heard that.

my entire car vibrates like crazy and makes this loud vibrate noise when the ABS kicks in. i asked it on here like a year ago when i was playing in a parking lot on ice with the ABS, and people said it was normal and theirs was loud as hell too. hmm.

This, the only reason to go to Brembos would be if you have had brake heat issues while autocrossing (this will only be an issue if you run huge R Comps like me, never an issue on street tires) or if you plan on road racing. If you go with brembos, make sure to use a pad with smooth engage and release characteristics if you are autocrossing, anything aggressive (looking at you HP+ and Carbotech) will cause the ABS module to freak, likely resulting in a totaled car.

There's a brake thread on the miata forum that i need to dig back up. People's ABS freaking out and hammering the **** out of already hot rotors and literally exploding them, taking chunks and stuff out. Its pretty gnarly.

Been there. The reason that I moved to brembos was that I came off track at Academi, and my front right rotor sheared along the cooling vanes and collapsed. The first photo is why nobody in motorsports will use drilled rotors. The whole idea behind drilling the rotors was not for cooling, but to allow the vintage pads to vacate their gasses (new pads are not gassy unless you roast them, at which point you have much larger issues), then later to decrease the rotating mass of the rotor. This was a very short lived trend due to the stress concentrations that would build around these holes leading to rotor fracture (I have almost lost a leg to a front rotor exploding in a Formula SAE car that I was testing).

The "pop" is not really a noise, but you feel it in the break pedal when the ABS kicks in. It happens on all vehicles with ABS.

You Stang shouldnt shake, but if your talking about a feeling in your pedal that's prob normal.

Mine has always made that noise during ABS or AdvanceTrac activity. That is likely just the sound of the ABS pump buzzing away.

The noise is normal. Mine has done the same when I had to panic stop and the abs activated.

We inspect brake rotors time to time at work using either xray or penetrant.

One thing I can tell all of you. Your rotors are CRACKED. Lol. Every single rotor made will have cracks in them. Hundreds if not thousands of small crack. So when the abs beats the **** out or a rotor and the rotor gives way. It should not surprise you.
