Trunk Mat/ Spare Tire Cover

So I put 2 cases of water in my trunk awhile back and when I got home I noticed the mat/cover was bent and I guess it's made if styrofoam or something. I cut a board to fit over for the most part and a post that sits right where the tire should go. It rattles really bad when I drive and I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions?

I went to hobby lobby and bought some fluffy cotton stuff for like four bucks and stuffed it in there. Also, wrapped a towel around the threaded steel bolt to insulate it between the mat and steel

There should be some sort of particle board or something attached to the carpet/cover. I've put some really heavy stuff in there and it hasn't warped. I too had to sneak some foam under the particle board bits so they wouldn't vibrate when driving.
