2013 V6 excessive differential backlash?

I was told the noise from my rear end clunking when taking off is from excessive backlash in the diff. Is this bad if I dont get it fixed and what exactly causes this? The ford tech said its normal but It should be making noise or hesitating to accelerate from a stop

How many miles on your car? Auto? Manual? Do you have aftermarket gears? Any suspension mods?
