Exhaust rattle.

So, lately my exhaust has been rattling. Took a closer look today and found the source. Ugh, I wonder if Dynomax has a good warranty. Gonna call them in a few.

Looks like they do depending on the model. For example Stainless steel.
That pic makes it appear that it rusted and cracked. Stainless shouldn't rust like that, although some stainless does surface rust a bit.
Does it look like you may have hit something with it? If so, probably wouldn't be covered.
I'm guessing you may have to send them pictures before returning the actual muffler.
In any case, good luck.

Just got off the phone with Dynomax and my system is covered under lifetime warranty.Woohoo! They are going to send a replacement and once I have the original off the car, they will send a prepaid shipping label so I can send it back. Can't complain about that!

It doesn't look like anything hit it. There's no ding, just the crack. As far as if it's SS... doesn't look like it to me either, but they advertise it as SS. Here's a link to the catback that I have.

You're not kidding! I was pleasantly surprised with the warranty service. I did have to provide proof of purchase, which had me worried because I bought the system in 2012. Luckily, I was able to retrieve it on Amazon. Overall, a great experience with Dynomax!

Excellent!
I guess it's an unpolished SS.

That muffler is likely constructed from t409 stainless steel. It has the minimum amount of chromium and nickel in it, and can still be considered as being stainless. It is magnetic, as opposed to t304 stainless steel, which has a higher chromium and nickel content, and is not magnetic.
Many exhaust manufacturers use t409 due to its lower cost, and because it is easier to bend than t304.

Could you paint it with something to keep it from rusting again? Would that void the wtty in their eyes? I'm sure they are aware of the fact that it would do this if left untreated.

Yeah, I'm sure it's a lower grade stainless.

They didn't even ask to see pictures and are sending me the replacement first, so I won't be removing the old one until I have the new one.

To me, that's awesome service!

It looks to me like the rust leaked out the crack from inside the muffler. Maybe only the skin of the muffler is (low grade) stainless and the baffles and whatnot inside are not?

The most frequently used stainless steel in performance exhaust systems is T409.
One article I just read said, "409 Stainless systems will suffice for areas where road salt isn’t an issue."

It started rattling about 2 weeks ago. I'm in Columbia, SC and as you guys may have seen, we've been dealing with a ton of rain and flooding. I believe the muffler cracked and all the rain lately has caused the exposed metal to rust.

Well that, and there's moisture in the exhaust from when the engine is heating up. That probably didn't help.

Yeah, it probably doesn't help, but you wouldn't believe how much water I've driven through in the past couple weeks.

Got the replacement muffler today and noticed the tip looked a little damaged. Smh. They resolved the issue quickly, but expected everything to be protected from UPS with just a little bit of bubble wrap on the tip. No other packing material was used. Sent an email to the rep that I dealt with, including pictures. Hopefully, they'll take care of this issue as well.
