Thinking Of X Pipes

Hey guys, im new to the scene and website. i recently put 2012 GT500 Mufflers on my 2012 V6 and love the sound difference i get now ! quiet at times loud when you want it, but not too loud. Lately i've been getting the itch for just a little more aggressiveness as far as sound. im not really looking to change mufflers since i like the look and sound of the ones i have on now. Just looking to add to that so i heard X and H Pipes are the way to go. but if i get one do i will i NEED a tune ? and does anyone know if it will be to much drone ? here's a link to how it sounds now with the GT500 muffers added.

You will need a tune for off road x-pipe. See my thread here for details and video of my GT500 quad conversion:

One step closer to quad tips!

I have the BBK off-road x-pipe.

Well for one. X or H pipe are the ONLY way to go. You could just eliminate them and have a full dual exhaust with no cross over but you will most likely have crappy performance.

Heres what was posted in the "A beginers guide..." that you should really read:
"4. Midpipes: The Factory mid pipe is a Hybrid H/X pipe with 2 cats, and 2 resonators. Your aftermarket mid pipes will come in 1 of 2 configurations, either a dedicated X or H, with the option of cats or no cats typically.

X-pipe: It has been dyno tested that an X will make more power, however marginal it may be (typically 3-5 whp at best). Typically however, your X-pipe will induce a LOT more rasp, something someone may want to keep in mind when choosing their mods.

H-pipe: Again, as was said above the H-pipe will give up a few whp to the X-pipes, but the lack of rasp may be a little more what some folks are looking for. "

Basicly they are almost identical to each other as far as performance. You will NEVER notice the 3-5 whp you may lose with the H pipe but the sound difference is going to be a big factor when deciding.
In case you're wondering rasp is that buzzing can of bees sound you hear on every Honda with a muffler.

Heres the link: A beginner's guide to modifying your V6

Just read through it and it should help answer a good amount of questions you might have.

Not necessarily true. They have y pipes and j pipes as well. But these would have to be custom fabricated because there are no bolt on pieces for the 3.7.

no no no. Why would anyone put a Y pipe on their 3.7 or 5.0? Dont confuse the new guy. Also J pipes are ment for sound resonating, yes there are J pipes some turbo cars use and maybe some others i dont know about but just stick with what works for the 2011+ 3.7. No Y pipe and no J pipe is ever a consideration with these cars.

Just saying. There are other options if you're going strictly for sound. Hence why I will never get an o/r pipe for the 3.7. It sounds terrible IMO and I wouldn't sacrifice sound for power. There was a recent thread where someone got a j pipe for their 3.7 and said they loved the sound of it. It's all subjective so if the OP isn't happy with the X or h, just know there are other options.

J pipe is again just an added pipe used similarly to a resonator. its equal to the little boxes you see on the side of your stock intake tube. It can not be used to replace a mid pipe.

You know I have never seen one on a car and rarely hear about them so this slipped my mind, but yes a Prochamber is there as well. Anyone have any good videos up on what the prochamber sounds like?
I think i have seen a couple but they had Pypes Bombs or some other axel back so it didnt sound as good to me.

I don't think GT mufflers will do much for you. Go with some GT500 takeoffs.

Honestly, catless H-pipe with a set of resonators in the over axle pipe to stock GT mufflers is pretty nice. May not be loud enough for some, but the sound is clean, which is hard to get on this engine.

I'd agree with that. I was speaking more of a power increase point of view. I have GT over axle pipes on mine with the GT500 quads and the exhaust note is so much more clean and refined. Something Ford should have done from the factory imo.

And it depends on what the rest of the exhaust system is.

Leave the cats and resonators alone and put on a set of Short tube headers. My Borla Touring A/B sound almost like the Borla S-type with my set up.

You can, but they have to be adapted somewhere, due to different piping diameters.
