Swapped gears

I know another gear thread. This one may be a little different. I had 4.10's for the last year and had a whine that bugged me more and more every day. So I had 3.73's installed this week. My first impression is not bad. I was a little worried that I would lose that off the line grunt that the 4.10's give. It isn't quite as jumpy off the line but I haven't really gotten on it either. He said to take it a little easier for a tank of gas. I toyed around going 4.10's again but I think I will be happier with the 3.73's. Might not scare potential buyers away as much when it comes time to sell. On the other note about the whine... My first installer told me that whine was going to be normal, after ready up on quite of few post the argument went both ways. I can now say that the first installer was telling me what I wanted to hear. The new gears are very quite and the new installer said it shouldn't have any noise regardless the ratio. The one thing is my first gears were Motive and the new set is FRPP.

The new 3.73's are quite. I'm just mad the first installer with the 4.10's blew smoke up my butt

The old ones may have whined because they were Motives or because the installer jacked up. IIRC, Motive does make some or all of the FRPP gearsets now so there is that.

However, the fact that one was 4.10s and the other was 3.73s changes nothing. Properly installed, the 4.10s should not have made noise. If you were worried you wouldn't like the 3.73s as much then why not just get a FRPP 4.10 set?

I would say it was a jacked up install. There's a long story with that and looking back I am pretty sure he just told me that the noise was natural with that short of gear. As for going with the 3.73's this time around I had always kind of regretted the 4.10's and I was thinking more of when the time comes to sell it that the 3.73's might not scare off buyers as much. So far the little bit that I have driven with the new gears I would have to say I like them more. It doesn't come out of 1st and 2nd as quick so it feels like it stays in that power band longer.
