CEL O2 Sensor

My check engine light has been on for a while now and I had the code checked and they told me it was a catalytic efficiency or something like that. I went under the car and tightened down everything on my exhaust and double checked to make sure there aren't any leaks, cleared the code, drove to work and it came back on. So only thing I can think of is its either a bad O2 sensor or one of my cats is bad. I have the bbk catted x pipe with high flow cats and roush axle backs. How can I tell if at the sensor or cats? If if its the sensors, how can I tell which one is bad? If rather not spend $400 replacing all 4 sensors...

that code is for the rear o2 sensor. The Primary o2 sensor measures AFR, the secondary just measures cat efficiency. What that code is saying is its detecting more emissions than it thinks it should be (due to your high flow cats) and therefore thinks your cats are failing. Nothing is wrong here, its just the nature of the beast.

Potential options are to clear the code, or install defoulers.

Clearing the code will cause a "not ready" status on your inspection, here in Houston we are allowed 1 "not ready" and will still pass, so thats just what we do. Not all places are so lenient however.

Installing defoulers basically just spaces the O2 sensor out from the main exhaust stream a bit, exposing it to less exhaust, and therefore tricking it into think everything is ok. These are a hit or miss, and can sometimes cause other fuel trim related issues, though they are very rare occurrences.

I suppose that makes sense, I have had these cats for well over a year, but I have been fighting the CEL since about 2 months after I installed them. Now is that one time like over the life of the vehicle, or per year? I live in the woodlands, which I would guess follows the same laws as Houston?

Never mind I didn't understand what you meant my one not ready, but I just looked it up, your allowed one not ready Readiness Monitor. Now how can I clear just the one for the code my car is throwing?

I don't understand why anyone would sell a catalytic converter that
won't pass an emissions test. How can that even be legal to sell?

It passes emission, but OEM cats are at a much higher standard than is required to pass emission. The 02 sensors are made to read the emission from the OEM cats, since the high flow cats aren't at the same standard, the sensors read that it is malfunctioning

Talk with your tuner about options, but typically they can turn the CEL off.

Cats have cell counts that denote their density. A less dense (high flow) cat flows more exhaust, and therefore more "emissions" to be read by an o2 sensor.
