Check Charging System

I searched and found some people posting a bit about this before, but nobody seems to have actually gotten much of a response regarding it so I figured I would try my luck.

My 2013 V6 keeps throwing the "Check Charging System" alert while driving. It doesn't seem to stay on for more than 10 seconds or so, but has become much more frequent. It's gone from doing it maybe a few times in a month (times being I would see it flash off and on throughout a drive) to now doing it maybe every few days.

I don't have any corrosion on the battery and I have checked all the connections, which are tight. Checked the alternator->positive terminal connections and those seem tight as well. Multimeter shows battery sticks around 12.5 (mostly between 12.5 and 12.6) while off and 14.1-14.3 while on (so alternator seems to be providing power). Turned on absolutely every electrical item with the car running and it stayed at at least 14.1.

I have no clue why this alert keeps popping up, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. I want to assume that this might be a bad sensor or something? Idiot lights are almost entirely unhelpful.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

so when you say you checked connections did you remove them & clean them (sounds like you did) also check the ground connection at the frame or motor (not sure where it is). I would make a point to get his documented if your dealer is cool and it does mess up late you MIGHT have a chance. Those voltages are good. I hate intermittant problems.

worse in rain/heat?

Yes, removed and cleaned. Technically even changed out the negative terminal connector since it wasn't as tight as it should have been. I don't really have any dealers around me that I trust. The last one I took it to lied to me about the airbag recall being done (which was one of the two reasons I brought it in).

It's actually worse in cold weather than anything. Possibly rain, but it hasn't done that enough to tell if that makes it worse. At the very least it isn't doing it only during wet weather.

I'll try to find the ground connector and check that.

Where's the voltage regulator in these cars? Alternator?

Pretty sure, but if it was a regulator issue, then I should be seeing an issue with the alternator under load, right?

EDIT: Checked shop manual, it's internal. I'm going to check to see if there aren't any DTCs (didn't see any last time, but might as well try again) or maybe try to get lucky and grab check while it's happening to try and narrow it down.

Well, I have a pretty good idea what might be happening. No clue why I didn't see this before. Somehow the loom running to the alternator got loose and was apparently resting against the header. Looks like it needs replacing. Anyone have any idea what this part number is? I can't seem to find it. I might give a go at repairing the small wires as that seems to be the only ones that were harmed. (Going to go out on a limb and guess those are the voltage regulator wires)

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Ugh, I think it's part of the battery cable harness, which I definitely don't want to replace. Guess soldering time it is.

Okay, repaired the wires (only one needed a new portion, the others just had a slightly crispy insulation. Also, it's very much part of the battery cable, I completely missed the giant part number tag on it telling me so. Probably too tired to be doing this kind of work, but oh well). Car seems to be working okay so far, but I haven't run it much so I don't know if that fixed anything. At the very least I don't have frayed cables laying on metal anymore. The alternator also seems to be doing 14.3-14.4 instead of the 14.1-14.3 it was doing, so I will take that as a positive sign until my car catches on fire from my terrible solder job.

^ Looks like you got lucky and only one wire was totally jacked up. Solder job should be fine as the wire is thin and doesn't need to carry much current (vs., say, a frayed battery cable).

+1 on what Tym said....

I like the positive pun....but as you know there is no sense having a negative attitude.
