Question V6 3.7 (227 or 228?)

Just out of curiosity but why do some auto shop sites and stores (Autozone) list two different V6's to choose from when looking up parts?

They either ask for the 3.7L (3726 CC) aka 227Cu. In.

or

the 3.7L (3731CC) aka 228Cu. In.

??

Is there really a difference? And how does one know which one they have?

Thanks, Sam.

My guess is it's an error in their system. If it offers 2 v6s and the size is the same it's likely a California vs non California car and may have minor emission differences and that usually have an identifier in the vin number

An error? I don't believe so like I said its multiple sites and shops that ask.

But you could be right about some V6's being California approved and some that are not.

No clue - lol.

Do you have a particular site that we can go to for an example? Just went to auto zones website and it lists 1 v6 for a 2012 and 2013 mustang.

I worked at advanced auto for 5 years and the computer systems are complete crap and I know my store found a lot of errors in it so I wouldn't put much faith in it.

It could likely be the way some of the data is entered as well. Generally car manufactures want Clean engine labels like 3.7, 5.0 or 350 both due to history and simplicity. There is a good chance the engine is not really 3.7 liters and it's slightly over or under. Chevy did this with the LS1 it's technically it's only 346.xx cubic inches which would make it 5.69xx liters but Chevy called it a 350 or 5.7.

I dont believe the AutoZone site gives you the choice but in store they ask.

Check out Ebay Autos they have it like that on there.

So does this Site

Or this site

I could go on all day haha. But thats not the point. Just trying to understand why but you hit the nail on the head its probably a California thing or a PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle) type of deal. Or what you said about how GM does theirs.

I also have seen many references to the 228 cu in vs the 227 cu in.
I just spent a good hour searching and come up empty.
I've seen many Ford pickup truck ads that show 228 cu in.
It may be just a coincidence but the Mustang specs typically show, "227 cu in and 3731cc". It just so happens that the metric size, 3731cc converts to 227.6796 cu in., which is closer to 228 cu in. then 227. But if you calculate the displacement based on the published bore and stroke(both English and metric) they come out closer to 227.3. Not sure how they came up with the 3731cc.
