Maybe a set of headers, eliminate the cats, and a true dual exhaust (No H or X pipe).

True (divorced) duals is what Stray is saying.

If you are referring to eliminating the crossover, a good muffler shop can do that. The rest of the exhaust are all "off the shelf" parts.
Much of the "crackling" that you hear on high performance cars is due to un-burnt fuel entering the hot exhaust system and igniting.

Something like this

Put some Short tube headers on it and get rid of the Hybrid H/X pipe and put a true X like the FRPP cut and clamp

Siber, I know you've got the FRPP cut and clamp pipe. I really like your exhaust sound. Did you notice the exhaust get any louder after installing the FRPP xpipe, and/or make the exhaust more aggressive sounding? I like my magnaflow streets, but want to make them a touch louder (not too much), and I want to make them slightly more aggressive as they're kind of a smooth sounding exhaust. Any idea if the FRPP xpipe will do what I want?

It takes an X-Pipe & Glass Packs to get that sound. You mean the nice crackling sound you heard in the 70's & 80's I'm guessing. I do the same thing to my cars. Sounds 100 times better than the exhaust now days. Todays exhaust sounds more like a garbage disposal.

Most of the extra noise is from the Headers, the X pipe actually smooths the exhaust note out. Those Mufflers are not too much louder than yours

I just use a Universal X-Pipe $30 on Ebay & Cherry Bomb Glass Packs about $30 each on Ebay. Sounds better than most expensive exhaust I've heard. I'm not buying for a name....I buy for the sound I want to hear. I think name brand exhaust is a bunch of B.S. You're just paying for a name. Pretty much the same with CAI's. A cheap set up does the same thing if the pipe size is the same. I don't go with name brand until it comes to internal engine parts. You can't substitute there.

Will headers plus my axle backs alone give me that note?

Pretty much, the cut and clamp X pipe smoothed mine out and a little more but not a lot.

The Clip Black Stang put up is exactly what I'm talking about on the new exhaust. Sounds crappy to me....but it seems people now days like that sound. Give me the loud roar of the 70's hot rods over that any day. It's just not loud or aggressive sounding enough for my liking. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a decent video of my exhaust done this weekend so I can post it. You guys ever watch Street Outlaws ? That's the roar of a hot rod to me !!!
Back in the 70's you pretty much had 2 choices for headers...Mac or Hooker & 2 Choices for mufflers Hush Thrush or Cherry Bombs....Nobody used anything else. That's how you get the loud hot rod roar & crackle. Oh how I wish I still had my Road Runner from back then so you all could hear that beautiful sound. Was a much bigger motor though...426 Wedge w/ a blower so that probably helped in the sound.

I guess when you can run your exhaust out the hole in the fender like they do or out an open header and up the horse power to get it to rap out like that.
I am also one that the louder the V6 sounds the crappier. I did my exhaust backwards, the Mufflers were last and it was no place to put Cherry Bombs for the noise.
I was always one that had built 429's and 351 4V Cleveland's with cut out.
You forgot Headman and Blackjack Headers.

You're right....Headman & Blackjack were around but I can't remember anyone using them...but they may have. The 351 Cleveland was a great motor. Had one in a Mercury Montego. Yeah, if you ran open dumps on a 6er it would probably sound like crap. But they do sound pretty darn good with w/ dual exhaust, X=Pipe & Glass packs. I think it's as close as you can get to sounding like a V8.

2014 DIB 3.7 w/ sport shift "Blue Cyclone"

I remember "Doug's" header's & the others, I just did bassani axlebacks and get the "crackle" on de-celeration. These Bassani's let me control the sound I want.
