because mine is "only" the V6 I feel the need to compensate so I say it has the quad cam V6 when folks ask.

DOHC = dual overhead cam. 2 per bank, 4 total.

Both the V6 and V8 have a total of 4 cams. As the previous guy said two on each bank of cylinders. It appears to me that one cam operates the two intake valves on each cylinder and the other cam operates the two exhaust valves. Am I correct about this?

Yup! Separate intake and exhaust valve cams. Twin-independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT)

Once upon a time it was called "dual overhead cam"
But, since there are 2 heads they changed to quad cam.
You will hear the term "twin independent variable cam timing" tivct for short. But that applies to twin and quad cam engines, depends on the number of cylinder heads. Still a quad cam on V motors.

I still go by SOHC/DOHC myself. Also if you have TIVCT... you have... THE VTEC!

Ti-VCT is the name given by Ford.

Ti-VCT is the next step up from VTEC, because all 4 cams can be tuned independently, more tunabilty. But, also more complicated.
