So I'm considering adding an amplifier to my car. I have the base stereo with Infinity Kappa's up front.

Should I just add the line out converter and amp or also upgrade the head unit?

Depends on how much money you want to spend. Obviously adding a head unit is going to cost a whole lot more. I added a sub and switched out the door speakers and that was good enough for me.

I have a convertible so a sub is a tough one. I've heard them mounted in the trunk but you really need to crank them to hear it inside the car due to the metal separator. I'll prob end up moving the Infinitys to the back and putting components up front.

Your best quality setup would be to run an aftermarket head unit like alpine and feed your door speakers with a separate amp hooked directly to the head unit. Completely bypass fords speaker amp. If you want bass include rca outs on your choice of amp. Not cheap or a quick fix but when you're done the quality will be unmatched.

Your exact same question you asked is the same I also asked and did years ago. I was told by a few people that I should change Head unit also, others told me I would still eventually change the Head unit. I started Upgrading everything else, Speakers, Amps etc. Held onto stock Head unit for awhile, but time later did go ahead and change the Head Unit. I'm happy I did and wish I had did that much sooner.

Did you go with a double or single DIN head unit?
