Is it normal for the daytime running lights to only come on when in drive/sport shift/reverse modes?

The horizontal lights

I would think so since they are "daytime running lights" which would equal you driving.

Most cars with DTRL only turn on while in gear. The exception would be a manual trans

Not sure why I thought they remained on the entire time the car is on. Lol.

Correct. On a manual trans this is how they work.

Anyone else's DRLs a slight different shade than each other?

My left is more white than my right.

I just drive with my parking lights on during the day time, since my halo fog lights are wired to them, and I also like having my tail lights on as well.

When you drive with just your parking lights on, the DRLs will dim just the same as when the headlights are on. At dusk I'll drive with my parking lights and fog lights on since the DRLs will dim down about 50%. I noticed this when I was at a stop light behind a shiny black pickup truck. I could see what happened in the reflection of the pickups tail gate to the DRLs when I tuned the parking lights on and off. I had always thought the DRLs were at 100% when they were on.

This is true. I would prefer them to be at 100%, however I wouldn't have my fog halos or tail lights on otherwise... I guess I could rewire some stuff but that's not my forte, nor does it bother me much.
