Steel spare tire/lug nuts

So, had a flat tire awhile back. Pulled the spare out of the trunk, slid it on the hub, that's when i discovered that the lug nuts weren't going to work with the steel rim. I was going to need some standard lug nuts not the aluminum rim style lug nuts that came on the car. Anybody else find them selves in this pickle? Still haven't picked up some lug nuts. I know I have a can somewhere in my shop full of old lug nuts. Haven't found it yet. I know I'm tempting fate.

I'm surprised to hear this with factory nuts! Do they bottom out on the stud before they hold the rim? Do you have the stock hubs and studs?

I used aftermarket McGard nuts to install my alloy spare two days ago without problems, but it may be thicker at the center than the steel spare.

Crap!!! I never have thought about this. I understand what has happened, i can see the factory lug nut bottoming out. I have some open lug nuts somewhere in the tool shed, i guess i'll have to put 5 in the trunk

Yes it was truly a bummer. The lug nuts bottomed out way before they touched the wheel. At the time I thought about using a bunch of washers so I could move the car, then thought better about that. Went and got the F250, threw the wheel in the back, left the Little Pony where it was, got the tire fixed and so on. You can read about that experience in what grinds my gears. That was quite another trip.

I bought a full-sized spare and wheel to replace the official Ford Cub Scouts electric inflator that I found in the wheel well (New '14 V6 PP). On checking, however, I found that the ***** holes in the replacement wheel were too small for a standard wrench, so I had to buy a thinner-sided adaptor to fit. And yes, the tire does fit into the wheel well in the trunk - I've read that some owners have had trouble with that.

I keep an 18" long 1/2" drive flex head breaker bar with ratchet adapter and socket in my trunk--find it saves me tons of time over using a standard tire iron.
