Assume this means my rear dif is leaking?

If so, what do I do from here? I have seen some snippets about this but since mine is now leaking I would very much appreciate some good sound advice on how to proceed. Also, does this fall under powertrain warranty?

Thanks as always in advance!

It's just the breather. They will replace it with the revised valve and a tube that relocates to the top of the axle and they will top off the fluids. Just take it in.

Yeah. I would imagine it does. I took mine in and it was und the BTB still but it's part of the powertrain and it's a known issue. Ford didn't even blink when I brought mine in and asked for the updated part (mine was barely leaking or in the very early stages)

Looks familiar when I had my 3.7 went to my dealership and replaced it under power train warranty no problem.. Have it service right away or you might end up changing the bearings, I think thats what it's called.

To do that they'd have to pull the cover, and I would not let anyone do that unless they are an experienced rear end specialist (insert jokes here).

You will want them to check to make sure the pinion seal is not leaking too.

Some amount of oil coming out of the breather is normal, but you definitely have hit the jackpot there.

And yes any ford dealer will do. Although I've found taking it to the dealer you bought the car from if possible makes things go a bit smoother

Whatever it is they better cover it. Dude at my local ford said it falls inder the b to b warranty. If so mne expired last month. Might have to take it to where I bought it, those SOBs are good people.

Mine was done under the power train warranty, although my dealer missed the TSB and I bought the vent myself.

Its just on the driver side and front of the dif. Im 99% that its just tge breather. I saw some say it was super easy to install. But Im thinking if the dif fluid is easy to replace I could switch it to RP while Im at it since it prob needs more anyway.

I actually replaced the part myself. When I took my car to the ford dealer to have it done, they claimed they couldn't get my car on the lift. So the service manager gave me the part and some fluid. It's a snap. I didn't even jack up the car. Just drove it on a couple pieces of wood and swapped them out. Cleaned up the dif and checked the fluid (which was perfect still)

So all I need is that turkey baster, correct? How do I make sure fluid is proper?

I don't use a baster, I have a little do dad thing that threads onto the bottle and has a hose attached to it. So all you have to do is stick the end in the diff or trans and squeeze the fluid into the gear box. When the diff is on a flat surface, full would be when you can stick your pinky in and feel fluid.

Cool thanks! Oh and I meant the baster looking vent is the only part I need, correct?

Mine did this also. It started so early that the left tube has yet to begin rusting with 35,000 miles on the car. Good to know that dealers are doing this repair under warranty, will have to take mine in soon.

I was looking at the oil on the pipe in the pic and the underside of the car looked a little shiny was what I was going after on the seal.

Yeah I see that too now. I figured the oil got too hot and it burped out some which got all over that area? Thats what the tsb says happens which is why that part has a bubble on it?

Hell I dont know, Im tempted just to clean it up and replace the fluid with royal purple and keep an eye on it. Maybe with good fluids it wont even happen?

I'm dropping my car off for a gear swap tomorrow and I'm gonna ask them to check it... B2B warranty expires in 7 days and work is getting done at the dealer.

Smart move. Wish I would have thought of that a month ago, I'm guessing this has been a small leak since I bought it.

Why? To Change it? You have to either suck it out or remove the rear cover.

So it's not easy it sounds. Just thought if it was easy Id replace it with RP. So it sounds like the smart thing is to make sure it's at full and install the new breather and be done, correct?

Thanks

Yeah, somewhere there's a spec for the oil level to be something like 3/8" or 1/2" inch (I don't remember exactly) below the fill hole on top of diff.

If you do wind up having to have the cover removed, might as well swap it out for an aluminum cover with a drain plug. Will make future gear oil changes 100% easier.

So taking the pan cover off is similar to a tranny pan correct? Just a gasket and bolts?
