Trunk Mat

Does anyone else have the issue with the trunk mat being super flimsy and not being able to hold weight? How'd you fix it?

Like for instance I stuck two cases of water back there and the mat basically caved in. I buy a piece of plywood underneath to give it more support but it rattles slot so I wasn't sure if anyone else had a solution to the issue

Ah towards the middle, where the spare tire would go?

There's supposed to either be a spare tire or a foam piece bolted in the center for the cardboard trunk mat to rest on.

This.

The foam piece just has a portable air pump and a fuel tank adaptor, I took out my spare and put this in.

Try a hunk of styrofoam maybe(?)
or a blanket or old cushion

I don't have squat in mine and I have laid in my trunk (working on stuff) and never had that thing cave on me.

You might want to make sure the mat is locked into the plastic right where the latch and light are. There are a few tabs that hold it up right there and if they are not in I could see how that might cause it to cave in.

It doesn't "latch" but the plastic where the latch is (closer to the rear bumper side) has 2 holes where the mat slides into. It's very easy to over look this. Sometimes you have to really pull it toward the rear of the car to get it in correctly.

hey, do you (or anyone else,) know when they started adding the trunk wells like that so the spare is hidden, & not in the way? the 60s?

My factory trunk liner has a sheet of particle board attached to the bottom to span the spare tire well.
