Winter Beater

what do you guys use for winter beaters, if anything? I don't use anything, but I'm lucky that I just got a job where I have a 2018 F150 and can usually take it home in the snow since my boss knows the stang is horrible in it. That's good and all, but obviously since it's a work truck, i obviously won't be driving it anywhere after it gets home to my driveway, unless its back to work. was thinking about finally getting a cheap beater SUV just for the winter. the f150 handles like a DREAM in the snow (we just had that huge storm here on the shore of NJ, and in snow/wet mode plus 4H, it didn't once kick out, get stuck, or anything. it's absolutely amazing what ford has done with their trucks...) but even though it's a base f150, sticker on it was $39k..... pretty ridiculous, so financing a new f150 is out of the picture, so i figure i'll just look for something old. i always liked nissans, and the early 2000s xterras are cool. i'd get a 90's boxy pathfinder, but i can't find them anywhere by me.

what do you all suggest?

My wife got a new all wheel drive Ford Edge so I got her 2014 Ford Fusion Ecoboost as a winter beater now.
Before that I had a 1999 Honda civic for a couple winters and before that was a 1998 Mazda Protege, both were surprisingly reliable.

If your okay with the fuel that thing will eat in the winter.
My brother in law had one and it was brutal on gas in the winter, then again your fuel cost are a lot cheaper where you are.
The key with any winter car/truck in the "rust belt" where we live is WINTER tires, not all season.
It was a nice ride and now that it's gone he misses It!

03/04 Expedition or Navigator 5.4L 4WD. Cheap as hell, lots of options for those years, newer body style with IRS, can tow pretty well and absolutely CRUSH IT in the snow being as heavy as they are.

I have had an 03 Expy since 2011 and with good tires I never, NEVER have an issue in the snow, even deep snow. I'm moving out of the country and my Dad bought it off me in 2 seconds when I said I was selling it for the same reason. We just got about 8" of snow here and I have not had any issues getting anywhere even before the plows really got it under control on the roads. He's letting me keep using it till I leave on Monday.

Tires are just basic Goodyear ATS tires. Little loud on pavement but when you go offroad or get into snow they are amazing. Still have good tread on them after about 30k miles.

Steer clear of the 05/06 Expys and Navis. 5.4L 3V is a pain to do maintenance on and those early 5.4L 3Vs are known to lose cam phasers and that=new engine. 03/04 Expy is a 2V and the 03/04 Navi is a 4V.

No issues towing or towing in snow either... towed this Mustang down to Baltimore and had to yank the trailer through a few snow drifts to get out of my neighborhood and 0 issues. Heated/cooled seats and climate control are nice options on the Navis and the EB Expys. I think you can get an Expy like this with 120k-150k miles on it for $3k. Mine has 150k on it and runs like new.

Edit: Lol you are in NJ too. Well this snowstorm we just got, was out in it on Thursday no issues and then 3AM yesterday I towed down to Baltimore once I knew the highways were cleared but the backroads were not great.

i was driving this 99 expedition at work (old cop truck that was taken out of service) before I got my f150...man, that 90's style ford interior hard plastic is just so antiquated lol. i'll have to check out later year navigators and stuff.

The 03+ are much much better. 03 Expy/Navi actually got the updated body style a year before the 04 F150 did and looks and feels like a "modern" truck interior.

I don't mind the snow at all. I drove the stang today, no problem, but most main roads are clear. I wish I could afford a new f150 like my work truck... love that thing, especially in the snow.

Most main roads were clear here Friday morning but still I hate it. And this arctic blast 11 degrees with 20 mph winds. No... No...

We don't get much snow here in Tennessee. When we do, I drive my 1991 F150 4X4 that only has 59,000 miles

I drive my wife's old 2002 Neon after I bought her a different car a couple years ago. The Neon currently has 211k and is great on gas. If it's snowing, I drive my 2002 F150 FX4. I've got 125k on the truck.

I don't per se have a winter beater since the Mustang has gone to a weekend car so I just continue driving my 2013 F150 that no one around here likes since it has a 6.2 in it.

Beater is a 2001 Bonneville with around 175,000 miles on the clock. It's desperately in need of a brake job, however, so the Mustang has been regular duty as the daily driver until I can get the Bonneville in the garage and do those brakes.

I just drove a 2017 Caravan down to Norfolk. Rental car. Thing sucked *** in the snow. Little tiny bit and it got stuck. Or I'm just used to driving my old Expedition that never got stuck. Thing got stupid good gas mileage tho. 6 hours from NJ to VA and used 3/4 tank and I was going 65-80mph most of the way.

I see how ppl might hate these new 8-10 speed transmissions tho... thing was shifting every 2 seconds.
