I bought a 2013 mustang with only 2,000 miles on it about a year and a half ago, car now has around 14,000 miles. The issue I am having is when lets say I am in stop and go traffic, when giving some gas to go, sometimes it shifts real hard into 2nd. I am babying the gas and it seems to spin up and then a real loud hard bang so to speak coming from the rear ( differential ) I think. Any thoughts? I did bring it to the dealer last Dec and they could find nothing wrong..... Now of course it is out of warranty but there is something not right. Would love to hear your thoughts on what it could be.
99% sure it does not have a tune. I first noticed it when I was in stop and go traffic and the car had been driven for a while. I did remove the breaker, let sit for a while, took it out on just side streets and it worked fine. Again when its been driven for awhile ( so hot ) and then in stop and go traffic is when it ( to me ) shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and I am babying the gas. You can hear and feel a hard ( for lack of a better word hard bang ) at the rear differential when it shifts.
Sorry, I bought the extended Warranty and you are correct.
Mine is 7 years 70,000 on everything

Hey,I'm old and forget stuff
Ha! Ha!
It would seem to me that if it were the differential or bad universal joints it would make the noise in other gears also. If it only makes it when shifting into second I would suspect the transmission. I would take it to a reputable transmission repair shop and describe the problem and see what they have to say.
It does not do it all the time. Maybe I have not explained it right. The loud bang is coming from the differential but it seems to me the transmission is spinning up before it engages 2nd gear. Does that make any sense?
Sounds like tranny to me. You’re hearing the bang in the rear because of the pinion slamming the ring (maybe there’s wear there and it’s exaggerated?) but the trans shouldn’t be winding up in the first place if you’re going easy on the gas.
If I were having a problem like this I would have my Ford dealer run the VIN to see what the 'history' of the service records were. Maybe it was a 'lemon law' Mustang . Then I would run a 'Carfax' on the VIN to see if it has been in a wreck .
The original owner drove the car for 2,068 miles and then sadly he passed away. The car sat idle for years and I ended up buying it from the deceased brother.
My only hope here is I did bring the car to the local Ford dealer saying that I thought there was something wrong with the transmission before the warranty was up but at that time it was just a noise I heard and not the hard 2nd gear engagement.
I'm bringing it to them today and I hopefully.........

Not the same vehicle, but our brand new edge did the same thing.
Took it into the dealer, they did a complete reset of the transmission and was told to drive it very easy and make complete stops for 500kms while the transmission relearns.
Problem solved.
In my case I'm really not sure what the problem was.
In our 14 Fusion Eco ,which has only 50k on it, we had to have some solenoids changed as it would upshift and downshift hard erratically.
To this day it's still a problem, which is a shame because other than the transmission being a pos the rest of the car is excellent.
It's the main reason why it's getting traded in for a 19 5oh. Fords autos in general are far from great, I'm hoping the 10r80s are much better, as the 6r80s were slush boxes without a tune and converter.
Let's hope the new 9 speeds FINALLY give Ford a great FWD transmission they have never had.

Fords service dept tells me that there is nothing wrong with my car. They explained that while in stop and go traffic the hard shift/bang I am hearing in the differential is caused by the transmission spooling up between first and second and the stored energy is twisting the driveshaft hard right when I am letting off on the gas.
I still think there is something wrong as I have never had or felt this happen in any other car I have owned or ridden in and I am old ( 58 ) and I would have thought one of you guys would have said my car does the same thing...... so not sure what my next move is.
Go to a different dealer. I remember I Had my 13 for 1 month and the noises coming from the from ending were horrific sounding.
The dealer where I bought the car from said it's just normal, f that, brought it to another dealer and within 5 minutes they said from lower control arms.
Problem solved. Your issue is not normal.
put out a request to see if some local to you to compare (or ask to drive a similar one at a dealer) the stored energy and twist story doesn't sound plausible to me.
Do any of you guys experience this to any degree with your cars? I did take it out the other day and it worked fine, like I said it does not do it all the time.
I have a 2012 V6 and have experienced the same on a hot day, in city traffic following highway driving. It did happen a few times and always thought it was transmission related but never followed up on it. Now have a tuner and did not experienced it again since...
