So, I've made a thread thinking it was my swaybar links but I don't think it's that. Then I thought it was the crappy caliper job this shop did, and the caliper was clanking when I would be braking, and as i slow down, I let my foot off the brake to modulate it, and that's when I'd hear the noise.
I noticed it only coming from the passengers side which is where the caliper was replaced, but today, as I was braking/turning, i swear i heard it on the drivers side TOO!
so, what would cause a clunk in the front end ONLY when low speed braking/letting off the brake, and turning? it doesn't make ANY noises hitting bumps at all. any thoughts?
Ball joints are a possibility as are any rubber bushings in the front end. However, if the noise started right after the caliper replacement, I would be checking for loose fasteners. Check wheel nuts too. If you can jack the front wheel off the ground, you can check for looseness due to worn components pretty easily by grabbing the tire at 9 and 3 o'clock then 12 -6 looking for any play. Is your milage high enough to warrant routine service?
Front Lower Control Arms possibly. Mine have done the clunking with low speed braking since 23k (31k now). There is a recall on the LCA's too, I believe their is a revised version available.
I found that stuffing the bushing with high-temp grease stops the problem most of the time, the only time I notice the clunking is when the grease has been washed out and I've been driving in low speed traffic for a long time in warm weather. It's not annoying enough to me since it may do it 1-2 times for a few minutes then go away.
The issue is due to the proximity of the LCA's to the exhaust, causes the bushing to swell in heat allowing additional play in the LCA, causing the clunking to my knowledge.
I have a brake grabbing - crunching problem when I back out of my parking spot and turn the wheels, first thing in the morning and after work. It only happens 1 time and only when its cold. I did do front sway bars and end links but I think the problem happened before I changed anything. I think it could be an ABS sensor error or sticking - iceing in the caliper. It is very reproducible and happens on both sides in the front depending on which way I turn the wheel. I am baffled but there are some threads out there describing this sort of trouble.
finally brought it to a new place around here that's got a lot of great reviews so we'll check it out. guy thought he heard the problem, but i took him for a ride anyway because it seems to do it when the car is warm rather than cold...so he heard it when we drove and they're thinking it's the caliper the other shop put on. guess we'll see!
If it started when the other shop did the caliper then its almost 100% that.
Also, a caliper job is like 30 minutes with hand tools. I know not everyone can DIY for various reasons such as health or location or you just don't ****ing want to but HIGHLY suggest you learn to do brakes, oil, diff fluid, trans fluid and basic maintenance if possible. Lots of youtube videos on anything you can think of for the 11-14 cars.
yeah, you're 100% correct, because they wanted to charge me over a grand to do the entire front system (rotors, pads, calipers) the problem was a stuck caliper he said.
my co-worker was like, dude you can buy a brake set wtih all that on rock auto for 300, and he said his son does this stuff...i'll just pay him and learn as i do it. everything looks easy except bleeding the system, which hes good with, so i'm going to do that. the shop was full of really nice people, and he dropped the price i needed to pay for them to diagnose the problem, but yeah...too much.
Can you hook up a hose and turn a wrench 1/4 turn? You can bleed brakes. Power bleeder is a one time $50 purchase. Caliper might not even be bad. Stuck is just a bound up slide pin half the time. New pins, new boots and a ****load of grease and it usually fixes it.

And $1k for front brakes even with calipers... I would have asked the dude if that quote includes a 55 gallon drum of asslube at that price before I walked out.
