Smile My Second Mod...Flat Black Decklid Panel

Well, mod #2 is complete...added the flat black decklid panel from AmericanMuscle.com. It arrived earlier in the week and the first thing I did was unroll it, put it under a towel and iron it as flat as I could, then stuck it on the front of the fridge...my wife was thrilled...LOL. I left it there since Tuesday, and now had time to properly install it today. I can tell you that in doing that, it was very flat and easy to work with. Worth the wait!

I washed the car today and cleaned the trunk panel extremely well. Then, I put a nice coat of Mothers carnuba cleaner wax on it, buffed it, and it was slick as a whistle. I cleaned the magnet very well on the back, heated it up with a hair dryer in the garage, and got it situated perfect around the trunk emblem. Then, working my way outward, got it to lay just perfect.

I'm very pleased with it. It is sitting just perfect on the trunk, no wrinkles or bubbles or places where it's off the body. It's just right. I think it gives the rear end more depth, makes it look a little "meaner", and kinda gives a throwback flare from Mustangs of old. For $40, I think it's a pretty simple little mod that adds a cool touch if you take your time, prep it, and do it right. If you hurry it, it's going to look like crap.

The instructions talk about taking it off every time you wash the car. I almost hate to do it, because it looks just right, but I guess I'll need to. We'll see how it holds up and I want to keep an eye on the paint underneath so that it's not jacking anything up, but I really like the look.

Whatcha think?

Looks good, there's a car that looks just like yours here in town. He has 1/4 scoops on it though.

Re: My Second Mod...Flat Black Decklid Panel

Looks great I think it really compliments the lower black rear valence and the lower rocker panels on the side of the car. I'm thinking about doing something similar to mine. Paint that small area between the tail lights black.

nice, helps balance out all that black on the bottom of the rear bumpers on the 2010s

Re: My Second Mod...Flat Black Decklid Panel

I like the look so much that I've pretty much decided...if the magnetic panel doesn't hold up the way I want it to, I'm visiting the paint booth and getting it painted flat black. It's the right look for the car and I agree 100% that it improves the balance of all the black.

Re: My Second Mod...Flat Black Decklid Panel

There was a pic on here or somewhere that has the black panel as you have but without the fake gas tank door~ it looked good as well.

I did the same thing on mine and I love it. But I painted mine. But that panel looks really cool.

Re: My Second Mod...Flat Black Decklid Panel

its neat that they have a magnetic thing to put on there instead of having to do a vinyl stripe

Re: My Second Mod...Flat Black Decklid Panel

Yah, I wish they had something like that for the 99-04's other than the honeycomb panels. I think they would sell a good amount of them.

Re: My Second Mod...Flat Black Decklid Panel

looks great! I can't stop staring at the pictures! Your absolutely right, it is a good throw back to the old model Mustangs and for so cheap too. I'll definitely have to look into other budget mods with my 2010 (hopefully I can snag a 2011 5.0 *crosses fingers*) once I get home from my deployment in Iraq.
