Exclamation 3:73 gears-less economy?

Hey y'all: anybody know if one would lose a little fuel economy-on a 6 speeded 5.0-versus the gears that are in the car(without the 3:73 upgrade)

Re: 3:73 gears-less economy?

Well, I probably would not "mod" the new 5.0-at least not for awhile.
`And unlike some-I'm the dood that wants to get some fuel economy-at the same time that I am getting I am getting great performance..

Re: 3:73 gears-less economy?

with my mods and 4:10s in my 06 GT I get around 220 miles per tank, so that's 14mpg.

I agree with you. If you are worried about fuel mileage then you really don't need to worry about fuel economy.

Re: 3:73 gears-less economy?

You should have the gears in by now. Don't worry about MPG.... you are driving the most fuel efficient Mustang ever!

Re: 3:73 gears-less economy?

I think I am averaging about 16.5-17.5, Highway/City combined, with the 3:73s. On a longer trip-driving home from the dealer, about 140 miles , one way-I recorded 20.50 MPG!

Re: 3:73 gears-less economy?

I took a 300 mi round trip on Sat. Stock everything with 3.31 rear; about 80% highway, 65-80 mph, the remainder was tight twisty mountain roads, averaged 25.0 mpg

Re: 3:73 gears-less economy?

Yes-even though "it's a muscle car"-I promise, that I still have a concern about fuel economy. The fact that the oil supply is finite, and the way that gasoline prices fluctuate, is reason enough for me to want power, performance, and at least decent fuel economy. In a more "perfect world"-I would be commuting in an EV-and 'playing' in my Mustang on weekends!

Re: 3:73 gears-less economy?

I had 331's on my 2010 GT and was not happy at all, felt sluggish. When to 373's and a tune and it like a different universe! You will be more then happy with 373. Was talking to a sales rep at a Ford performance shop here on west coast, and he has a 2011-5.0 with 331's and he was like, "why did I ever do that, it's such a slug off the line"

I do not notice the MPG change at all and I am running the 91 octane tune on my car. I commute, work 2 jobs and I still get gas on the same days as I did before.

Re: 3:73 gears-less economy?

ericgt: Welcome. I appreciate that feedback. I have asked myself-more than once-why I was so "positive" that I wanted the 3:73s, so "bad"... I had a 2003 MaCh1 with 4:10s, when I bought it. It was a blast to drive, for many reasons-but since I wasn't taking it to the drag strip-it became kind of an 'overkill situation', for city driving. I changed it back to 3:55s-and it was alot more streetable. (I've had 3:55s in a bunch of vehicles, and always liked this ratio.) I guess I figured that 3:31s, would be too 'far in the other direction'-and that the 3:73s would be a happy compromise-given my other experiences. So far-I haven't regretted my decision!
