Question Transmission Upgrade

Hey all,
I'm looking to put a new TCI Ratchet shifter in my 2010 GT (it's not available yet but according to their tech team it's comming very soon and they're already taking pre-orders). I've been told by some of my friends that if I intend to manually shift my car...I need to "forge" my transmission. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this? I am going for 400rwhp NA but want the transmission capable of handling up to 700rwhp because I'm sure I'll put a power adder on one day. I found a kit from TCI Auto called the Ford 5R55S Master Overhaul Service Kit. Would this be good enough? Any help is always greatly appreciated Look forward to all your expertise.

Thanks,
Adam

Re: Transmission Upgrade

the TCI shifter alone wont do anything other than make it look different when you shift it from 1, 2, 3, etc. It wont help performance or hurt it. Its just the mechanism used for telling the car what gear to be in. With an auto you get the best performance leaving it in normal drive.

I assume by "Forge" your transmission they mean build it to handle the power... I wouldnt listen to anyone that would use such terminology anyway honestly. The stock transmission has been tested to 450-500rwhp so it should be good for you for a long time.

If you wish to hit 700rwhp the motor will have to be rebuilt as it wont even hold that much. This can get VERY expensive (say 6k to build the motor and another 2-3k for a stronger transmission plus the 5k-6k for turbo/supercharger setup) but that will get you there no doubt about it.

Re: Transmission Upgrade

manually shifting your auto is not going to do anything good, why are you wanting to manually shift it?

I'm under the impression that this will let me control the shift points myself...

Re: Transmission Upgrade

hmm probably to a point, every car is different. Some force you to shift if you have not bya given rpm, some just let you hit the rev limiter.

The stock shifter lets you do the same thing. The car in drive will be faster as it knows far bette when to shift than you pushing the lever. A tune will tweek these shift points to be better, that might be the best way to go vs trying to do it yourself.

I've seen guys use a ratchet shifter when driving...it's better fir manual shifting an auto cuz it has a locking mechanism that prevents you from over shifting past 2nd and 3rd...I want that but want to make sure my tranny can handle the constant shifting

Re: Transmission Upgrade

yea, my friend builds trannies..and he said manual shiftng isnt good for them if they arent set up for them like manual shift valve bodies and heavier clutches and ratchets. he said you can do it, but it shortens the life or them. im not sure bout the trannies in the new stangs though, i will ask him. most likely it should be ok though. i know that the racing aod's like mine and racing aode's are hybrids of the newer ford trans.

Re: Transmission Upgrade

wut tranny is in your car again? also, spector is right, when u got an electric tranny, it's really hard to control the shift points cause all the safety controls ford put in the electric auto units. that's y they make aod conversion kits for newer cars.. unles your brakcet racing, it may be easir for you to just swap to a manual. unless you just like auto's such as myself.
