New Mustang Questions...

Hey guys, just purchased my first Mustang, 2011 GT Prem, Race Red, 6-speed. I love the car, although I do admit to being a previous F-Body fan (new ones cant touch these Mustangs). Car is great, however, one of the selling points for me with these new 5.0 v8's were the advertised MPG Ratings.

17/26 !?! Ok, I only have 1000 miles on it, but Im lucky to get 17.4 right now, and thats mostly Highway, and being mindful of the gear Im in. My question is it too early to tell the true MPG, or is it just impossible to acheive 20+ for these cars?

Car is bone stock, not a real heavy foot. Anyone suggest any mods to improve on the gas mileage?

Thanks all!

I hear you I just got mine too, I'm being really careful and even utilizing the skip shift and I'm averaging 14-17mpg city it only has 350 miles so far lol I think the numbers are way off on mpg if I drove this thing like I wanted to I would get 8mpg. But I guess the next question you have to ask your self is why are we really concerned with mpg we purchased a 400+hp 5 liter v8 its kinda sill IMO lol I'm not too worried about it enjoy your stang I'm loving mine my last was a 2001 gt premium glad to be back Nissan 350z in-between what a joke that car is can u say nightmare

Re: New Mustang Questions...

you should be getting better than 17 on the highway, are you driving 80 etc? or the speed limit? I know you are using 6th gear so thats not it lol, does it have 3.73s as that hurts mileage vs the regular 3.31

Re: New Mustang Questions...

Highway speeds are usually 70-75, in 6th gear. So you dont think putting a few more thousand miles on it would correct the MPG? Also, anyone noticed any improvements by adding a CAI?

Re: New Mustang Questions...

I drive about 38 miles one way to work and about 10 of it is stop and go and I average about 23 mpg. I notice that if I fill up my tank and hit the highway my mileage is around 25 to 26 until I hit the stop and go off the highway. I do only drive about 65 thought and that may be the difference.

The estimated values are new and stricter. They are pretty accurate. Your driving technique or situation may be affecting it slightly. What rear end gear ratio do u have?

I would shift between 2000 and 2500
Is that 370 between fill ups?

Weight plays a role. The EPA testing was probably done on a lightweight base model. You will lose depending on the additional weight you have, although not much.

The rear could be a stock 3:23, 3:55, or 3:73 option package. You need to look at the window sticker if you still have it.

Some gears you can more than likely shift pre 2K. That may not be the sweet spot for your car either. It takes learning.

Lastly don't trust the dummy gauage... test it for yourself. The programming could be slightly off.

I have to be honest, mine is way off... I can drive from Livermore to Chico (exactly 200 miles) and back on one tank with a few 3rd gear passes along the way averaging about 75-80 mph.

That's just over 400 miles and it will drink about 15 gallons when I fill back up, simple math puts it at 26.6 mpg minimum but my average trip mileage will read at about mid 19s somewhere.

I actually get 28mpg at 65 mph and this is with 3.73 gears.

Re: New Mustang Questions...

Its all in the driving style. I have about 11K miles on mine now and in normal driving I get 19MPG. Thats hard on the right foot but not racing all over town.

Driving easy all over town 21mpg

Highway
80 mph- 23mpg
75 mph- 24mpg
70mph- 25.5 mpg
65mph- 27.2 mpg

55mph- 32.5MPG !!!! That wont happen again, I was leading a pack of cars to a funeral service.

BTW, I have the stock (3.31) highway gear in mine. Apparently the 3.73 costs about 1-2mpg depending on speed and driving style.

I leave the AVG MPG on the display to keep me paying attention to driving easy.

Re: New Mustang Questions...

For those of you with under 2k miles...you have to give these engines a little time to break in. Put a few thousand miles and use a calculator to figure gas mileage. The instant/lifetime economy numbers are there to entertain.

Re: New Mustang Questions...

Good luck, with the few mods I have I am averaging 14 miles per gallon, but part of that is my foot!

I did a long trip to NC from Texas the other week and averaged 23 miles per gallon on the highway with my tune returned to stock, the minute I put the performance tune back on it dropped to 20 on the highway, 3.73 rear end in combo with everything else I guess and 85 mph average speed.

Re: New Mustang Questions...

CAUTION: your mileage, 'may vary'.. .. I have about 7000 miles on my car, now. I haven't done but one little ole mod. I have the 3:73s, and the 6speed. I have been keeping track of every fill-up, in every car and truck I've owned since 1981..(call it, 'getting involved with the gas records, and maintenance log-taken to another level'..) I drive 11.5 miles to work on the interstate-mostly in stop and go traffic. My "high" on a longer trip with the cruise control-at about 71 m.p.h. was 23.50. I average between 16.50, and 17.75, 'all the time'... My .02 on fuel economy: 412 HP, and 8 cylinders-is probably the wrong type vehicle to achieve the killer m.p.g. You need a new Focus for that.

Re: New Mustang Questions...

Thanks for all the great replies. I'm not really trying to achieve anything more than what the sticker says on the car when I bought it. Just trying to confirm what others are seeing.

Hey if they come out with the focus rs in America like they are talking I might have another car on my radar at some point. They aint half bad looking hatch backs. But I agree, 8 cylinders/412 hp is not something that is gonna go lightly on gas. I DO LOVE MY FOSSIL FUELS THOUGH (so sick of the green movement and these "sports" eco cars that are coming out)
