Oil changes

I have heard so many answers before that I am looking for more clarity. I put about 1500 miles on my car every 6 months. I average about 2800 miles a year on my car. I know they say 3 months 5000 miles. I am currently driving the car twice a week. The question is should I get the oil changed at exactly 3 months or can I wait some?

Yea my car has only 820 miles on it and it's also just a weekend driver. I'm curious about the whole break in oil change. Should I do at 1k to be on the safe side??

Re: Oil changes

Under those conditions, I would probably go 4 months. After the oil runs through the engine it is still heated, stressed, and picks up contaminants. Even sitting, it deteriorates, but it should be fine for an extra month.

Re: Oil changes

I went to the Ford dealer here in MS and I asked the same question. They told me that every 5,000 miles is the way to go and to use full synthetic. Depending on your driving, based on my driving I do roughly 10,000 miles a year on every car I've had, 4th mustang now, so that's 2 oil changes a year for me. Just letting the car sit like a weekend driver I would suggest once every 4 months.

Re: Oil changes

The oil in my Cobra gets changed once a year with Royal Purple 5W30 right before I put it up for storage. It doesn't get started or driven the whole time it's stored, and synthetic oil doesn't break down like conventional oil.

The GT will get Royal Purple 5W30 twice a year. I don't drive the GT all that much and very rarely venture out in the Cobra.

You are correct-this is a topic that has been discussed numerous times..
Most oils these days are a semi-synthetic blend. Motorcraft makes both, a semi, and a full syn. I use the semi in both my GT and the wife's F150. I change mine about every 2500-3000 miles. (Her's doesn't get changed as often-because for the most part, she is 'responsible' for handling this)(even though I wind up doing it for her, as well..)I do believe in a 'break-in' oil change. I did the first one at about 800 miles, on my car... There are going to be plenty of opinions regarding this topic, as well. Just do a 'search', on the subject!
