3.73 gears & MPG.

So I've got my 2012 GT Premium on order w/ 3.73 gears. Will there be any noticeable reduction in MPG with the 3.73 gears installed? I'd imagine the effect will be negligible.

That's what I figured. I'm not too worried about being fuel efficient anyway.

It tells me "File does not begin with %PDF-"

I can see the link you sent me just fine. When I put my Vin # in I get an error message from Adobe Reader.

Re: 3.73 gears & MPG.

I read on another forum that it takes a week or two for them to get the vin # in the system before I can print out the window sticker. Not sure if that's true or not.

My VIN didn't show up until about 7-8 weeks after the order date (or a week or two before the build date) if I remember correctly. I believe the window stickers show the most conservative MPG values (17/26) which are obtained with 3.31 gears. With the 3.73 gears, a 1-2 mpg decrease is expected if driven "economically".

Re: 3.73 gears & MPG.

I've had my car-with the 3:73s-for nearly a year. I've kept track of every tank of gas/fillup(I've actually been doing that, continuously, since `81 .!)My car averages 17.50/gal., combined highway/city. I drive down the interstate to work, one way, about 11.5 miles-it is a daily driver. The car has about 9200 miles on it. I have gotten economy in the twenties, with the out-of-town trips I make(a couple of times , in that year timeframe) As has been stated, "your mileage will vary" ) I do rap out the gears, and do give it some gas-frequently-with a high regard for the real possibility of getting speeding tickets -I've had waaaay too many. Good luck.

Being my daily driver, I'm getting an average of 20-21. But if I fill up an run 100% highway I'm seeing it stretching toward 26 and that is playing nice.

Now that you have 9200 miles, do you feel the car got any faster from break-in? I have 3500 miles and want something to look forward too

How could you possibly notice a reduction in MPG when you don't even know what it will get?

Re: 3.73 gears & MPG.

Well, i'm attempting to compare to the base 3.31 gears. Ford gives a 18/26 MPG rating on stock 5.0's. I'm just curious if anyone's noticed any difference with the 3.73's installed. Again, I don't imagine it would be anything significant...just curious is all.

Junkyard...I have the 3.73's and I average 17.5 overall city and highway. That's driving kinda hard cause it's hard not too. If I go easy the best I have gotten highway is 25mpg. Depending on where u live. I have hills. If it's flat you could get 28-29. Hope that helps

Re: 3.73 gears & MPG.

I went from 3.15's to 4.56's in my automatic and I went from 26 mpg's to 25 mpg's. So, you should be good.

I have an 11 GT with 3.55's (the best gears). I get an average of about 17 mph with about half highway miles. Have about 9400 miles on it and the mpg hasn't gotten better from when I bought it. I think that has something to do with the fact I drive it a lot harder now.

I'm driving from Memphis to Minneapolis in the Stang today. Will let you know what MPG I get averaging about 70-80 mph. I keep track of mpg on every tank of gas so I should have really accurate results for ya.

Excellent. Thanks for keeping an eye on it! Why do you feel that 3.55 gears are the best?

I was really just trying to stir the pot. Most people pick them if they are going to 1/4 mile race a lot. It traps better and saves you a gear shift. I like them because it is very drivable and helps you open it up a bit. Kind of a compromise for the all out performance 3.73 or 4.10 gears.

I would say, 'it's not as "tight"-enginewise'/a little more 'broken in' .. It's always been pretty, 'get-up-and-haul-the-mail .. It doesn't 'tick' when I turn it off now..

FYI, with the 3.55's I got 23.1 mpg driving ~80 mph for two straight tanks of gas. Hand calculated.

Are the 3.55s better for a MT; whereas, 3.73 might be better for an AT? That could make a difference.

I'm partial to my 3.73's just because. And I'm a dad so that reason is valid, and good enough for you young man.
