Another oil thread...please shoot me

For starters I did a search on the topic; currently there are 204 threads across ME and 26 in the 2011+ forum. So after looking through roughly 85/95% of those my question remains unanswered....

I've already determined oil brand, type and weight, my question is around trusting the system messages on intervals. After the sizable investment in my car I don't know if I'm ready to let it tell me when to change the oil. I may be a bit OCD concerning the matter. Do the rest of you trust it and change when it recommends?

Sorry this will make 205

Re: Another oil thread...please shoot me

sounds like you need to take samples of your oil and send them off to be tested, they can determine the good and bad and how much life it had left. Thats a good way to go! I am not sure who to send it to but I know there are companies that do this, just go with a good one.

Well I run Royal Purple. Full Synthetic. I don't care what the car thing tells me I still change my oil every 3,000 miles. I know they say you can run it longer and some oils will go out to 10,000 miles now. I still don't trust it. Hell the oil in my wife's car the dealer puts in they mark every 5,000 miles for an oil change.

Every 3000k miles, unless the owners manual recommends something shorter, if it says 4000k-5000k it will love you for changing it early.

Is it saying to change it before 3k miles?

I changed the factory fill on mine at 3,000 miles with full synthetic and will change my oil & filter every 5,000 miles on out, despite what my oil indicator says. I personally don't feel comfortable going for any longer in miles than that.

I say do what you feel most comfortable with, keep records of your oil changes if you do it yourself and remember to photocopy your receipts as they are on heat paper and will fade with time.

I've been doing my oil changes every 5000 miles. And I can promise all you that I am MUCH harder than y'all, on my car. When I did my oil pan swap, there wasn't a spec of sludge anywhere. Been using mobil, castrol, valveoline, or what ever is on sale that's name brand full syn with a BG moa oil additive. 5000 to 7000 on a full syn with a normal driver should be fine

I used to be assistant manager at a jiffy lube when I was in high school all the employees were friends of mine...needless to say the benifits of having a shop to yourself is endless servicing on all our cars it soon became habbit to change all fluids on our rides until they looked super clean...i still have that habbit I change oil ever 1500-2000mi if it sits for a long time ill change it even if it was just changed before it was parked!..
My mustang has 156,000mi on it and the oil is clean as can be..trans,dif,coolant all clean as well...
I say if you dont mind spending the extra $$$ on early fluid changes...DO IT!...it only hurts your wallet!!

get the oil tested, then you KNOW how much life is left in it and it can save you money... I change my oil once a year or I would test mine~ I just dont drive mine enough to get above 3k miles a year generally

Well there's the rub...the 2011GT owners manual does not indicate an interval, it simply states to change the oil when the system message appears...this includes the change at break in. Typically I change every 5000 due to driving habit, oil brand, oil type as so forth. When I asked several tech's (at different shops as well) they indicated that due to the technology of the engine I should wait for the message to display and only change it then. The first oil change needed message for my vehicle appeared at approximately 6500 miles...odd number.

So my question was really do the 2011 owners listen in this aspect or go with conventional wisdom concerning oil changes. IMO my vehicle should be due for another change but the message center has not displayed the oil change needed soon indicator.

I'm much less concerned with this scheduled maintenance cost versus a maintenance cost should something happen to my engine as a result of going longer then feasible on an oil change because the system message.

Unfortunately I do not have to time or space to do it myself so I leave it to the shop I trust.

At this point I'm inclined to just do it my way. Was really curious if anyone else was changing their oil according to the manual for this model year and engine type?

Thanks for all the feedback it is greatly appreciated.

This month will be a year that I have owned the 5.0 and it just broke 3K so I will be doing it soon. I think its a matter of preference.

Re: Another oil thread...please shoot me

I'm interested in this as well...We purchased the full service plan from Ford when we bought it so they have to change my oil/rotate tires/etc for free...now i'm wondering if they'll ONLY do it when that oil light comes on, because i planned on having them change it every 3K...

I've had my 2011 5.0 for 14 months. It just turned 18,000 miles last weekend. What can I say, she's no garage queen. I wake up in the middle of the night just to cruise the hwy loop. My dealership is idiotic and always forgets to reset the Oil Change reminder. I've got the service package too and I take it in every 3,000. They tell me I'm wasting oil by changing it so soon. I tell them, it's mine to waste! Btw, my Oil change reminder also came on at 6,500 miles.

Odd number, I guess they anticipate that most people will procrastinate a while before taking it in for it's service.

Garage Queen? Meaning spends more time in it then out? Or just not pampered, no driving in inclement weather and such?

3000 miles here...I just stick with the factory Motorcraft 5w20 Semi Synthetic. Walmart sells the 5 quart for $15. Then I just buy 3 separate quarts. Mechanics have been changing oil every 3000 miles for years. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

its ZERO fun for me to drive my car and get it beat up and messed up in the mornings on my way to work. I enjoy the car MORE only driving it when I want to as it stays perfect and is ready to go when ever I am, no need to worry about cleaning it first or anything... and no issues with driving on the interstate etc.

Here's the deal Spector, I was so careful when I first bought my 5.0, The first month, I didn't even put 200 miles on it! I though to myself, The car truly is an amazing machine, the first 5.0 in 16 years! I ordered mine in advance, I got the color and options exactly how I wanted. I showed up at the dealership at 11:00pm to watch the truck transport driver deliver my mustang to the dealer. I sat on the grass in front of my mustang for 2 hours that night, looking at the lines and just aww struck! I was almost gonna wait there till the dealer opened! Lol
I had my baby about 3 months. The only way I would leave her alone in a parking lot was if I could park as far from civilization as I could!
One night, my friend and I went for a cruise and then we went to a local night club. I parked my car at a not so near by Resturant. This is what I came back to...

Ahh that sucks!

My mustang was a dealer transfer so I had to wait a week before she came in...called every day on the status of the transport, checked to see when things would be installed once she arrived. Then when she was finally ready for me to take possession we took her sideways out of the dealer parking lot leaving rubber as we went! My face hurt for the next two days just from grinning ear to ear putting her thru the paces and squealing around any corner I could find. Nothing lifts my spirits like getting behind the wheel, going WOT listening to the growling song of the exhaust and flying at low attitude just because I can.

Wow! That must have pissed you off! I would be livid if someone hit my car. I try to park my car at the back of the parking lots where ever I go away from other car , but their is always someone that see's ur car and comes park right next to u! So I now park next to medians so only one side is exposed to some one parking.

ive watched my car get hit before I just dont enjoy daily driving my car, I get much more enjoyment out of driving it only when I feel like it or want to~ plus it stays in MUCH better condition. I dont drive it because I fear getting it dirty or putting miles on it, I dont drive it everyday because its more fun for me not to. I have no enjoyment driving my car to a store or some public place etc just no fun

I guess we should get back on topic

seriously, send the oil off to be tested, it will give you great input into how to change and how long it lasts.

seriously, send the oil off to be tested, it will give you great input into how to change and how long it lasts.
I plan to do that with this next change out of curiosity anyway. And thanks for the suggestion.

But as for getting back on topic where's the fun in that

Maybe you should send multiple samples? Like at every 1000 mile interval. Just so you can see when the oil starts to loose it's viscosity. Let me know your findings!!!

Just FYI...called Ford and scheduled my oil change (again, we bought the maintanance package when we purchased the car so we don't pay for oil changes/tire rotations/etc...) after only 3000 miles...they never said anything at all about it being too early, so they changed it and when I picked it up later they had a sticker on windshield to come back after 5000 miles for the next service...so every 5000 is basically what they're saying on oil changes, not bad I think...

Do not go by the service indicator or mustang oil life percentage I work in a shop so see it all day long!! That oil life indicator doesn't actually measure the oil viscosity or anything there is no specific sensor for measuring the oil life! The way they work is they take key info from the ecu like engine run time, average speed, engine temp, air temp things of that nature And puts all that info together and gives you a percent of how well the oil you have in there should be lubricating the engine. I have had cars come through my shop 2 quarts low and there oil life monitor still say 50 to 60% I don't care what the dealer says to me 5000 or 7500 I am goin to stick with what the oil I am putting in there is rated for so if I use valvoline and they say 3000 on there oil that's what I am sticking to and another thought to ponder if I was a truly accurate system you wouldn't have to manuel reset it, it would reset itself when it measured the new oil!!!!

I purchased that plan as well, only have 900 on the ODO, let me know if they will change at every 3000 or if you have to wait for the message.

We took it in at 3000 and they didn't say a thing. The wife did find in the paperwork where it says every 5000 miles is when they service the vehicles. After my oil change the sticker they left for next service was in 5000 miles.

I did notice that they didn't rotate the tires which leads me to believe they probably didn't do much else, **** who knows if they even changed the oil...

Pull the dipstick. May even want to check if they put the oil cap back on.
