Widest tire you can fit on a 2012 GT

I just bought my new GT a few weeks ago and I just picked up a set of the FR500 wheels with the staggered setup. 18x10 in the rear with 18x9 in the front. I want the back tired as wide as possible. Does anyone know whats the most width I can go on the back? My buddy has an '02 with 325's in the rear, can you go that wide on a 2012? Thanks for any help!!!

CruizinConcepts has a few packages that have up to 315's on a 10' wheel. Seems like alot to me. I would say between 275-295 you will be safe

I'm getting ready to widen my stock rims to 19x10 and gonna put 305 Mickey thompsons on it, 305-315 should fit just fine and hook very well.

Well there are alot of factors that mean everything. The offsets of the whell have everything to do with it for sure. But yeah you got room for meats but do your homework on wheels you buy and the offsets.I am going wider too.Be in mind too that changing to 20's and taller tires or smaller tires can can change your gearing and of course speedo

A 305 recommends a 10.5" wheels. 295 is the biggest they list that will fit. I know some people have put 11" on rear and run a 315 on the 2011+

Yeah but I had an 01 cobra with independent suspension and I had10 inch rims and has 315 nitto 555R's and they fit with no problem 305's on a 10inch will be fine, also on my cobra my tires never came close to folding over the lip even when tires has low air pressure for the track.

I'm getting them in glossy black with the chrome lip from AmericanMuscle

I appreciate the help everyone, I did a little research and it seems that a 305 should fit just fine on the 18x10 FR500s wheels I bought. I'm gonna go with a 275 in the front if I can fit it. I'm trying to find a tire that has the same height as my stock ones so I don't have to lower the car. (I bought the premium warranty and don't want to void it). Thanks for your help.

I actually plan on doing this when I get my new Stang. U can custom order 18x11 torque thrust rims by American racing and then a 305 will be nice and tight, can even go to 315.

Good luck , after u do the rims and tired please put up some pics for us!

I'm not going to get into the number debate here, but just say that my "Staggered" set of 22" tires are Front 245/30/22, and Rear 295/25/22 on "Nexxon" tires. No rubbing, no shaking, Flawless. Pics in profile pics. It's all about thee sizes you use.

I put 18x10 on the back with 305 nittos and there is plenty of room, could fit 315s and my car is lowered.

Which 305 Nittos? What was the overall diameter of the tire? I've been looking at running the NT555R 305/45R18s which are just over 28" overall diameter and plan on lowering between 1.5" and 2.0" depending on the kit I decide on and I've been curious if they would fit. I'll be putting smaller ones up front (245 NT555s).

I read somewhere that putting an 11 or 12" wide rim in the back required relocating the bump stops. I'm planning on going with an 11" so I'm curious I'd there's any truth to this.

It was on a gt 500 so I dunno if there's a difference or not.

That's what I have, the 555 drag 45. That's about the same drop I have with my springs. I have either 245 or 255 in the front on a 9 inch wheel, check out my pics they look pretty good.

That looks like EXACTLY what I am going for. Did you just throw normal NT555s up front?

Yeah I got the whole set from AM, free shipping and mounting and balancing. Seemed like the easiest way to go because they sell the tpms sensors and the calibrator and they installed them for me. Pretty easy just throw them on the car no messin around!

Nice. I have found cheaper prices on the tires (and their selection seems to have dwindled) but I will be getting my wheels from them for sure.

What lowering kit did you use, or did you piece it together yourself (and if so what parts did you get)? I've been looking at the Eibach Sport Plus kit, the Roush kit or the FRPP K springs with the appropriate dampers and strut mounts.

I used the pro kit, didn't want to change the suspension too much seeing that the car handles awesome already, I think the drop was 1.5 to 2 inches. This car launches hard at the track too!

I dont think your in texas ( so I cant help you out ) but if theres a discount or america's tire in your area, they will match / beat any price / quote. If you purchase the wheels from AM, Discount/ America's tire can sell the tires and then mount + balance + install them on your car. Plus theres that warranty.

Hope this helps!

Oh and I almost forgot, they can change over your current sensors and put them in your new wheels plus re-calibrate them

Didnt say they did. Said they just widened a set of GT500 wheels. They then also had the fronts cut down to 4" wide.

How can you widen your stock rim? I love my brembo rims but wish they came in a 10 inch width.

Idk about your area but both my work and this local speedshop I know of send the wheel out. What happens is the wheel gets cut in half with extra metal (varying on wheel type such as aluminum and steel) welding the new gap. It is then sanded down to be a smooth surface then recoated (whether its brushed aluminum, chrome, etc) and sent back.

So basically say you have a 8'' steel wheel that you want widened to 10''. You send it off, they cut it, take 2'' of thin steel sheets (or whatever thickness your wheel is to make it match) weld it like a band-aid between the two halves, sand it down to make it smooth for balance and tire-mounting and then recoat the wheel in whatever coating it had.

Check your local Discount Tire/ America's Tire for help with making this a reality!

If they are doing that way they are doing it cheap. The best guys will take another wheel and cut it for what you want. They do it right you will never know it was done. I know people making 700whp on widened rims with no issue. Its all who does it. Guy mentioned in this thread is one the best around. He buys another wheel to use instead of using some other crap weak stuff.

whoa buddy, its not a "cheap" finished product at all... It'll look factory if it comes through my companies sister stores.

I HAVE a set of widened pony wheels for my 91 fox. When they are lying next to the left stock fronts, cant tell a difference at all.

I mean as in using the steel sheets. It is better to use another rim. Cut it down and use it. Also it comes down to how welded(not like a band aid). Materials used to what they can with stand. I have seen a few pics of guys that widened wheels then cracked the welds with to much power. That simply sucks. If doing it simply make sure use some one who stands behind there work. And get it done to with stand more then you plan on making HP/TQ wise. Cause we all end up wanting more in the long run.

+1 it would suck to have a wheel come apart on a drag strip or even an interstate for that matter. Defiantly do your research before letting someone cut and band-aid your wheels

I dont actually know exactly how they do it or what materials they use but that is the basic steps of it. All I was trying to do was explain how its done in the most simple of terms
