Found axle leak, anyone else? 2012 GT

Went to put on my Barton shifter bracket (awesome improvment by the way) and found a grease on the drivers side of the axle. 4,200 miles. Anyone else had this kind of problem? Looks like the tube into the center section isnt sealed up....... wll be going into dealer later this week..

Re: Found axle leak, anyone else? 2012 GT

Is it on the same side as your axle vent? If so, you are seeing the overflow from that vent. I had the same thing on my car, the vent was on the passenger side for 2006 and I think is on the driver side for 2011+. You get that spill from the vent cap with spirited driving. A day at the track and I would have that same pattern of fluid on my rear axle.

You can get a part from Ford that was made for the Shelby. Essentially like a turkey baster bulb that threads in place of the vent cap. Took care of my problem.

Or you can replace the vent cap with a barbed brass fitting, take a long piece of hose and connect it to the fitting, run it up and zip tie it up high and that way the fluid will go up the hose but not spill over when the axle vents.

Intersting, I didnt notice a vent but wasnt looking for one either. That would explain why there are two of is with exactly the same grease on the axle tube. And I cant exactly deny "spirited" driving

The pinion seal on 2011 GT was leaking. It was a $110 repair. Very common issue for our 8.8 pumpkins. It might be leaking over from there to the axle housing...

I noticed a couple drips of oil in my garage too. I will have to investigate. Warranty should cover it.

You had to pay for it? Seems like that should be covered under warranty. That said, I don't think this is the OPs issue. Every '11+ I've seen does this and I'm pretty sure my '10 did as well.

Its just a rear axel seal. I do mine every time I change the oil out. 4$part, an hour of labor plus new gear oil. Nbd.

I don't think so. Mine was soaked with 3k miles on the car, no way the seal failed that early in the cars life.

I agree, although I havent been back under since Saturday it clearly is on the pumpkin side of the axle tube, which led me to think maybe a poor axle tube seal (press fit). I could see it being a vent but didnt see one (wasnt looking either). I'll let you know what the dealer says sometime early next week.......... should be interesting.............

Any axle/pinion seal leak will fall under your powertrain warranty. If it is a minor sweat you have to wait for it to physically leak then the dealer will fix it under warranty.

I had the same problem. Leaked at 3000 miles. Freaked out, wiped it off and no more leak/overflow. but I keep an eye on it....

This is a common problem with the newer cars. Ford went to a press fit axel housing so you will get some seepage. I noticed mine after only 1-2k when I was doing my cat back. Guy at the performance shop said its a common thing since they went to the slip fit.

Had it in the dealer, let them look and diagnose my keeping opinions to myself, tech got me out under car and it is clearly the vent tube on the drivers side. Now to investigate options to stop it.....

Any chance you would know the Shelby part number or where to find it?

Here's the TSB regarding this matter. Looks like they just revised it to include MY2012 vehicles.

I'll see if I can find the Ford part number. It isn't the same as the one that was posted from Shelby, the one I bought was only $35 - if you check with the dealer parts department, and they know what they are doing, you can find it under the 2008 Shelby rear end parts.

I wonder if it's the same as the part-number listed in my previous post (TSB). My parts guy said list on that is $50.

Re: Found axle leak, anyone else? 2012 GT

I didn't see that part number the first time I looked at that TSB you posted (guess it was too obvious right at the top of the page LOL).

But that is the correct part number:
