Econo Shift/Skip Shift Rant

I love just about everything about my car. Keyword (My Car) therefore its my transmission as well, And I cant stand being in slow moving traffic or just driving moderatly and my car tells me to shift to fourth gear and locks out second. Usually I know when it will do it and I can just give it alittle gas and shift normally, but sometimes when im not paying attention I shift into forth cause second is not there, and just bog down and that really pisses me off. Why would Ford think that I need to be told how to shift my gears, If I wanted an Automatic I would have bought one. Now that I'm done complaining is there anyway to disable it? Like pulling a fuse or disconnecting something. (without having to purchase a tuner)

No way besides a tune. They did it so you don't pay a gas guzzler tax. And I don't have any issues boging with my auto.

I haven't heard of a way to disable it without a tune. If you pay attention to what causes it to turn on, you can pretty much avoid skip shift. I haven't encountered it in a while now.

I never understood the skip shift thing.... I do see the prompt on the dash to go 1-4 for less fuel consumption, but never has it locked me out of 2nd gear...

It could be that you shift right after its disabled again. From my experience, the window in which skip shift is active is small.

Re: Econo Shift/Skip Shift Rant

I'm not sure I understand this. When the computer tells me to shift from 1st to 4th I ignore it and go to second...I don't have a problem doing that. Are you saying you can't shift it into 2nd when skip shift warning comes on?

Re: Econo Shift/Skip Shift Rant

Like others said, you need a tune to disable it. Do your research before buying one, they are not risk-free and may have implications on your factory warranty. (this hasn't stopped most of us btw)

Also, my speculation is that skip-shift is there to boost gas mileage and help Ford meet its CAFE numbers.

Correct, when you see that warning it should physically lock you out of 2nd gear. If that's not happening, something might be wrong with the lock-out mechanism ... but I wouldn't take it in for repair lol.

I will have to pay attention to it when I get home, but I don't recall it locking me out, I just ignored it...I agree...but couldn't that be a sign of something that is wrong?

I wouldn't worry about it. I think there's a solenoid or something that blocks the shift ... it might not be working. I doubt it would indicate any other issues though.

Yes there is a lock that prevent you from shifting into second and slides you into fourth.

I usually just go 1-3 in traffic. It won't keep you from going to 3rd.

It is supposed to lock you out of second. However, the window in which skip shift is active is very small. It's happened to me where the light stays on for a second longer and it doesn't lock me out. Its all dependent on rpm, throttle position, etc. So if it activates and you change any of these parameters significantly enough, it will deactivate and not lock you out. At least that has been my experience with it. I doubt there is anything wrong. But if there is, it shouldn't warrant a visit to the dealer IMO.

You can always go this route and avoid it entirely as well.

Re: Econo Shift/Skip Shift Rant

that option should be something that can be turned off... I think it causes more harm than good as it annoys the driver so much they probably just spend more gas and raise the rpms more often to keep it from doing it.

I can shift into second without any problems. It shows the 1-4 shift on the dash but it doesn't lock out second.

I have never been locked out of second. I do plenty of city driving and the warning comes up and I take it as a suggestion. Sometimes I may do it to fool myself into thinking I am getting better gas mileage but when I am at the gas station two days later; I come to terms with the type of car I bought and love. It's an annoyance, you should be able to disable it.

It doesn't completely lock it out it just make it harder to get in 2nd

I'm glad I never locked out of 2nd ... I only skip shift sometimes when I'm cruising... good thing thing for the variable valve timing to pick it up in any rpm

Unplug the Sensor, there is a "how to" on the web. You get the light but will not force 4th. Or like others have mentioned a tune but unfortunately not everyone wants to void the warranty.
