I have a 2014 GT and shift from 1to2 and 2to3 take at least 2 seconds when cold even after warming up shifting at high RPM * over 6 grand meets with extreme resistance.

Not true, just fyi. The switch was made mid '12, for late-build. I had the thick stuff in my early build '12.

Does everyone like there mt82 transmission

Hated mine when I had it. Made all the common sense upgrades but still had notchy shifting and impossible shifts in the cold. That transmission made me get the auto in my 2014.

To each his own....I love a big V8 and a stick. I've had 4 Mustangs, all 5.0s, starting with a 68....which was the only one with auto.

The good old T56 Tremec in my terminator with an MGW was the bomb. I've since graduated to the newer autos.

I have a 2012 with a MT82, had a 2011 with a MT82, I have trouble getting into first gear with the 12 and as I remember the 11 was the same way. I have 35K miles on the car now and although the transmission is ok I think they were not well designed or manufactured, one or the other. Shifting from first to second is not as smooth as it should be but the rest of the gears are fine. I have never changed the fluid in it as I understood it helped more in a cold climate and I live in NC. My advice would be not to buy a 2011 or 12 with a MT82 in it.

I have a 14 manual when cold I don't hear any grind on first or second. When the car gets all warm up I can hear a slightly grind on 1-2 between those shifts. Maybe if I change the fluids on my transmission, it will make shifting much better.

Fluid chanel and shifter change didn't do much for me at high rpm shifts.Putting a Mcleod clutch worked for me,now zero issues no matter how high rpm I shift at.

I have a 2014 and experienced the same. Did you ever find out the problem you had and did you change your tranny fluid?

On my second one. I have a early build 2011 and it took a poop before the warranty was up thank god. I have no issues even on 5 degree mornings with hard shifts. Whatever fluid my Ford dealer filed my new mt-82 with is pretty good. Only complaint with my 2014 mt-82 in my 2011 is it makes a strange noise if I wind it out in third gradually, like a fast ticking noise and viabraton coming though my barton 2 post shifter. I don't like it, and it worrys me a little. But I need a clutch anyway, so when the time comes I'll investigate, and put some good synthetic stuff in there.

No I haven't, but a lot of people have these kind of problems with shifting 1-2-3 some said just changing the trans fluid helped them with the shifting and stopped the grinding. I want to change the oil on it, but I'm having some issues with my car. I don't want the dealer to say they won't touch my car, because I did that change.

Yeah, I understand you being hesitant because of your warranty. I have the same thoughts too because of my warranty. I have the Barton short shifter and two post bracket so I don't have any problems shifting or missing gears. When my car is at cold start up my tranny shifting is perfectly quite, but as soon as the car warms up I can hear a slight grinding between gears (sometimes). Its not too bad so im thankful for that. Maybe we should go ahead and change the fluid like everyone else did.

I have the Barton short shifter and two post bracket too, Its so freakin short and nice that I love it. With that being sad, when I go to change gears or even rest my hand on the shifter the noise/vibration can be heard. Im hoping its just tranny vibration going through the shifter and not syncs. I should call David at Barton and ask him.

I have a 14 Track pack. No problems at all so far. I have owned the car since Aug 2013 . I drive the car hard powershift every day. It only gets driven in the summer months, I never ever noticed the trouble in shifting from 1-2 & 2-3 in cold starts before, until a few weeks ago when the temps went down to zero one night, I was like wtf is wrong with this car lol, My garage is heated and never drops below 17 deg, thats why I have never noticed this before, my shifter tranny has been good to me so far, I will make no upgrades unless they are needed, A lot of people tell me to get the MGW shifter, I am sure its a great piece, but hey I dont miss gears it does not grind all is good for now. I am actually suprised nothing has broken the way I drive this car

Same issue. Must be a barton issue. As much as I love it. I want the mgw race spec

same here, I think I'm good with my transmission. It can only be heard when the car is fully warm, nothing big. Only problem with mine is the ticking noise on the engine, but it seems to come back when changing the oil. I think I'm good with everything just little issues. ( knock on wood)

Mine makes a really fast clicking noise when I down shift from 3rd to 2nd especially... Almost like the gears are just slightly rubbing and about to catch. Sounds like something's going to go terribly wrong lol. The transmission has held up so far even when I drive it hard. Still waiting on my new transmission, who knows when that'll be :s

Yeah, I'd bash Ford for using a Chinese transmission. But my buddy HAD a 2014 camaro ss. And his was so much worse. So I guess all newer standard trans are poorly made nowadays. I wish I had a tremec but meh. I'll let the my-82 ride till it literally locks up

I knew about the MT82 issue before I bought my 2012 GT. Mine had the same issues you are al complaining about. I did the Barton Bracket Short Shifter & Whiteline bushing and it as made a 90% improvement. I get a very small hesitation 1-2 cold only. Another bonus was I also lost the 3-4 above 7,000 RPM lockout with the new parts. I still have the stock fluid but will replace it with an upgrade when the time comes but necessary for me right now.

its basically a 5 speed with an over drive. with 3.73's 5th gear tops out at about 120-130 and when you shift to 6th the car just dies.. plus the mt82 is really temperamental as has been stated... I don't know hardly anything about transmissions but I hate the mt-82.

Ive got a 13. Getting it into first at a stop is sometime an issue. Other than that mine is fine. Not counting the fact my clutch is a little crispy which makes it hard to shift at higher rpms. Im wondering if some of my shifting issues for dd'ing the car come from the clutch not being able to fully engage though, therefore making it difficult to get it in gear.
Regardless by the end of this summer ill have a centerforce clutch and fw in the thing, new bearing and t/o bearing.

So far so good, just went with synthetic Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90. A bit tough to shift when cold, then it's no problem when warmed up. Tranny takes about 2.75 quarts, good luck getting your finger in the hole though. I bent the end of a zip tie at 90 and is approximately filled 1/2" below the fill hole.

So far so good here also, once you get over the fact that this is in now way a winter transmission (it hates the cold)
I did a Royal Purple fluid swap at around 5k along with a Barton bracket and zero problems shifting anywhere including redline shifts.
One of the lucky ones I guess, knock on wood.

Sent from the future.

Um, pretty much every 6 speed on a car built for NA is a "five speed + and overdrive". So what? People here want quiet cruising at highway speed.

ANY gearbox with a remote shifter is going to be "temperamental". The GT500, for example, with a vaunted Tremec, has problems here, too. EVERY Mustang built since we got picky about shift feel in the '80s has needed help here, because the stock stuff is not built for the 1% of customers who are trying to make a hot rod out of a Mustang.

The MT82 shifting fixes are simple, effective and not, in the grand scheme, costly. So do it and enjoy the ride. I did a bracket first, then a nicer shift knob, then the Whiteline bushing, then the MGW shifter arm bushing. All helped and I was banging redline shifts at the track without issues on the stock shifter with these aids. Were I to do it again, I'd just go MGW race spec and call it a day.

As I've said, if anyone would be a hostile witness here, it'd be me, since I have an automatic now and I had to have Ford rebuilt the MT82 when the input shaft bearing spontaneously imploded just after the break-in period. I still liked the MT82 and had no issues after Ford fixed it.

I have the same problems with my 2015 GT plus the thud going into gear, 1-2 and 3-4 seem to be the most common. The "crunchy" is there too, and does seem to smooth out when it gets warm. Thanks for the great post.

I don't get under cars anymore, so aside from a dealer, are there any national certified shops you would recommend for the MGW shifter install?
