Missing 6th gear in Beater Car

I drive a 1997 Toyota 5sp on days when the weather is nasty( I'm finding myself driving it more since gas is $3.59 gallon in my area). Am I the only person that will be searching for the 6th gear in a car that never had one? In fact, becuase i wasn't paying attention I pulled back on the stick and heard a "THE GRIND". Thank goodness it didn't go into reverse. Its a big difference driving the Mustang and cruising @1800 rpm at 70mph in 6th compared to my "ricer" turning almost 3000 rpm in 5th.

I do the same thing in my Mazda about once a week, at least it's designed well enough that you physically can't move the shifter into reverse at speed.

Hell.... I find myself trying to shift gears when I drive my wife's Fusion! You always look stupid when you go to pull away and slam it into neutral! Happens to the best of us I guess! At least they are built to not let us shift into reverse while moving forward at high rates of speed!

Re: Missing 6th gear in Beater Car

I do that too everytime I get in an automatic. Both my stang and my DD are manuals, so I get real confused when I don't have a clutch and can't shift. I've even turned the car off in drive and tried to pull the keys out of the ignition, wondering why it wouldn't let go ... only to realize that I look like a total ****** by not putting the car in park.
