rear diff blew at 8k

hey guys i know I'm still pretty new to this forum but the craziest thing happened to me last night. I was driving my 2011 5.0 to the dealer to get it serviced because i kept hearing the wining noise from the rear diff, and as im driving there grey smoke started to shoot out the back of my car and i pull over and fluid is just pooring out of my rear end. the thing is im just a little shocked because i just broke 8,000 miles

Re: rear diff blew at 8k

i just finished speaking on the phone with ford and they said that a bolt siezed in the diff that why it did that, and i asked whats the reason it seized and they replied they dont know they have never even seen this before. they are fixing everything because its all under warranty but still, ive never taken it to the track once, so im just a little shocked on how this happened

Bolt seized? That's wierd why would you want the bolt to move.... Probably a bearing hence the smoke ( boiling gear fluid)

Re: rear diff blew at 8k

Could be the cross pin siezing in the differential, or the stack height on the shims too high, not allowing the spider gears to spin freely. That'll chew up **** pretty quick and that's some tight tolerances. The whine suggests though that the crown and pinion relationship moved somehow and that could be a bearing issue or a setup problem.

Very odd, the 8.8 has been basically the same for a couple decades. My brothers 89' anniversary car had 308k on the stock rear. My first GT had over 200k on the stock 8.8, neither car had any issues.

Re: rear diff blew at 8k

yeah they told me it was the cross pin that seized and it messed everything up thats why it locked, and they told me they i've never seen this type of issue before...I'm just shocked myself because my car is stock so its not pushing crazy power and i dont do burnouts or anything...and they said there just going to replace the cross pin not the entire diff...is that okay them just to replace the cross pin or shud they replace the entire rear diff

---------- Post added at 11:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:27 PM ----------

and yea the gear fluid was boiling out of the rear and smelled for miles lol

Re: rear diff blew at 8k

As long as the diff is cleaned out real well and the crown and pinion are ok, it should be fine. I'd still push for new bearings though, as all that trash had to go somewhere in the case. the reason they want to replace the diff spider gears and cross pin is it's easy and doesn't require re-setting the diff backlash, which is a modest pain in the *** off an assembly line and, for which they may not have a trained expert at the dealer. That shouldn't be reasoning for doing a half-assed job of it and having you back in 3 months when the bearings lunch themselves.
