2012 5.0 underbody rust?

I've had my gt for one week and 300 miles. I live in Phoenix Az so it's dry very low humidity. I took a look underneath the rear end and saw a lot of rust on the rear axle. It appears half the axle is painted and the other half is not. Very very bad surface rust already. Got underneath my Acura Lexus and tundra and there is zero rust period. I'm lost for words right now, very confused. Is this expected of ford vehicles? Any factual information is much appreciated if I hear it's "normal" is ridiculous unless this is is how ford ensures quality assurance

Axles are usually the first thing to rust, although I beleive the newer cars like yours are fully painted, possible warranty issue?

It's normal. I know...but it really is normal.

They don't paint it because you don't see it, unlike a big pickup.

The rust coating seals the metal and thus it slows greatly future scale. It'll take a century + for the rust on the axle to make any appreciable problem, especially where you are. The other side you think is painted is probably covered in a little oil residue from the axle breather. If you are concerned, clean it up and tremclad.

It's not oil,...it's paint. I plan on removing as much rust as possible and painting it. Im just very discombobulated on exactly why they don't paint it all in full as my other vehicles are. I'm a jet mechanic so corrosion control is a big deal so forgive me if I come off as a dumbass but please explain how surface rust protects from further rusting???

It's not a jet ... the axle rusting is no big deal. Search these forums (and others) and you will see that this has been discussed many times and always concluded to be normal.

I understand it's normal based on the other responses. My question is why does ford not protect it like other manufactures I have? I didn't say it was a jet, I simply stated that corrosion control is a big deal in my career. We prevent it so it never happens,...now that it is present Its new territory for me. This is the first ford I've owned,...I've had nothing but Acura Lexus and a tundra and they are all painted with no rust.

I think the biggest reason is, as said above, it does no damage and you never see it unless you're laying under the car.

I know you realize that it's not a jet, but I was just pointing out the distinction. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in what you have expertise in and apply it to a loosely related field. I work in IT and can find a million things technically wrong with many systems but they work without issue for 99.99% of the people so it's easier to just let it go.
