Ford Corp + MT82

Good news: Ford corporate has responded to reason and rational arguments and agreed to tear down my whining '12 MT82 for diagnosis and repair.

The story is long but now they're going to open this thing and find what they find and fix it. The final convincer for the dealer was another 5.0 came in for service and they tested it out and found it was quiet and mine isn't at all. You can hear my whine from my car coming a block away.

Advice to others: Don't get angry, don't get irrational, just speak up and keep speaking up for what you know is right.

I'll update the trials and tribulations bound to ensue when they get into this thing here.

Make them give you a new tranny. Not just fix what is broke.

Re: Ford Corp + MT82

One step at a time....they can give fixing it a try. Ford corp built this thing wrong the first time, I'm not sure I'll be better off with another new one, lol.

The dealer techs might use better bearings than the factory did....

They will use factory parts to fix it. There is no after market parts for it yet

^ +1 Make them know you will not be satisfied with rebuilt.....I got a story for you on a auto from GM.They had it out 3 times.New drum, new TCM,New seals and you name it.Could have put new one in for the time and parts they threw at it.I finally sh*t canned the car over the deal.Traded it(not with them) and never said a word.It was under warranty still so I did not feel bad about it.I am one of the lucky ones with my new 12 gt MT-82.A little notchy when cold but not nearly as bad as some and never had pedal sink to floor.I am sure problems will come as mods continue,I will do good clutch when this one starts to give up.If much trouble i will go with the T-56 or baddest/strongest they got at the time that will fit.

If it makes you feel any better, they use Getrag tranny's in Corvettes too

Re: Ford Corp + MT82

The Corvette's piece is a transaxle and radically different, as noted. Doesn't Tremec make the trans and Getrag the diff piece? i don't know, I'm not a Corvette guy.

Different Getrags have been used in lots of cars over the years. Their reputation is far from spotless. They've made some of the worst glassboxes in history. They've also made good stuff as well. This hit-and-miss QC has been a bugbear for all manual trans makers in the OEM, whether that's Borg-Warner, Saginaw, ZF, Tremec, etc.

Hopefully, I'll see a reasonably quick resolution to this problem but, it's a major piece of work so, I'm not counting on it. Take the time it needs and get it right is what I want.

resurfacing this thread: The car is at the dealer now, for disassembly and repair, starting yesterday. Gonna have to insure my bike, as the Escape they gave me ain't cutting it on the jollies front.

See, here's the thing: There's fight smart or just fight. Fordcorp needs to look into this thing and see what's busted? Go right ahead. Others may benefit from that insight. If it ain't right afterwards it's renegotiate with the understading that I've played fair all the way through.

I admire your tenacity, but the reality is that you are going to gain little/nothing and be without your car for (seriously) months of time while they tear it down over and over. This isn't even considering the time you will take transporting it to/from the dealership and having conversations with them via phone/email.

In all seriousness, I wish you good luck.

You may very well be right but, they need the opportunity to "make it right". I'd expect the same courtesy if it was me making an error.

I COMPLETELY understand what you're saying. In my mind, they wasted that chance when their official response to the NHTSA was that most cases were due to driver abuse.

Re: Ford Corp + MT82

Ford called today, here's the parts list for the rebuild:

Transmission ext housing
Input shaft
Input shaft bearings
5th gear
Countershaft bearings
Output shaft bearings
Support plate
Various other bearings and seals

Pretty much 2/3rds of the major moving parts in the trans and it’s pretty strong evidence my argument for failed bearings is indeed the issue, as they aren’t replacing any gears except 5th, (which I didn’t really have any issues with) and the extension housing is chewed up.

I want to know in what crazy world is it easier and more cost effective for them to do this instead of replace it??

Re: Ford Corp + MT82

Real world and corporate world don't always see things the same way. If you or I had to bear the labour cost of this, as individuals, we'd be buying a Tremec the next day. Cost, corp-wise is spread out among many different accounts and buried in mountains of bureacracy and past practise.

So how many other people having this issue?! Trans is smooth and fine all the time EXCEPT when power shifting into 2nd. It doesn't want to go into 2nd when I'm wompin on it.

Mine is smooth with an Mgw short throw and a stage 2 spec clutch. The syncros and everything are still smooth in my shifting.

Hi, just wanted to chime in. I have a 2011 gt with a manual gear box. At 18k I had it at three different ford dealers. First two said they need to tear it down, and find the cause. The third didn't mess around. I had an issue with a notchy second and thrid shift. At times it would even grind. The third choice of ford dealers said they've had a few with similar problems, and with no questions asked they replaced the whole assembly. Two days later I had the car back working good. Working for a dealer my self, I feel that certain dealers value customer satisfaction more then others. The dealer that replaced my trans, was ranked top in customer service for its district.

My manual had tranny replaced at 2200 miles. 3/5 the gear synco's went out. They talked about rebuild. I said new tranny or buy it back. They instantly put new tranny in it. At 6700 miles tranny started acting bad again. I traded it in on an auto. Never looked back.

I've read some reviews That say the 13's have improved shift quality. I test drove one the other day and it did seem smoother and a little more confident going into all the gears. But then it only had 2 kms on it. Has anyone else heard this?

Well, I used to think...man I wish I had a 5.0, but I'm so glad my 40K miles on my 2010 GT manual is still kicking strong...no issues...no worries!

I'm not sure, I've never really looked into it, and the salesman barely knew what a manual tranny was haha. Either way I remember gettin back in my car and thinking my clutch pedal was heavy, the shift was a little notchy but not nearly as bad as it is in my 11
