Exhaust setup differences

This is probably a dumb/uneducated question, but can someone explain the differences in how catback vs axleback sound/work? I understand that axleback means behind the axle (ie just the mufflers), and catback means starting after the cattys....but what's the difference? Isn't there just a pipe between them? How do they sound different? Thanks in advance

Often times with a fatback there may be a difference in diameter of the over the axle pipe and most over axle pipes will not have resonators. Also aftermarket cat backs are usually made of a different grade steel (mostly stainless) that holds its silvery color longer I performance difference, or at least not enough to count or matter

So would having that extra pipe make a difference in how it sounds if the muffler is the same?

If it does the sound change will be minor. Unless the catback is a larger diameter pipe in which the sound will likely be deeper.
